Cutting it down doesn't really make it a "short shifter" in the real sense. Yea, it's "shorter", but the throw is still the same.
But it's your money...go for it. *Or lack of money*

it will be tougher to shift if you cut the shifter...less leverage...a true "short shifter" pivots higher on the shifter itself - this keeps shifts smooth and quicker. I have used both - hated the cut one.
Now...I have used cheap no-name shifters from ebay and also a DC sports and there as a HUGE difference...wait it out if youre going with a short shifter and buy a good one...DC had a really smooth tight shift....It was great - highly reccomended

Don't cut it and DON'T buy a cheap one either. I had a cheap one and it ******* SUCKED!! I swear those cheap ones **** up your transmission...they are so rough and stiff and aren't very well designed. Just wait until you can save for a good one
I have had a cheap no name one too, and that came out as soon as I could get the dc sports one. There is a world of difference between the two. Definitely worth the money.

And cutting a little off the top of the OEM shifter won't do anything. If you want to make your own short shifter, get a thick piece of cylindrical metal, cut off a piece of your stock shifter BELOW the pivot ball, and weld that piece of metal in between the cut part of your stock shifter and the rest of your stock shifter. Lengthening the "bar" below the pivot ball is what does it for you.

Why do you want it right now? Spend your money on other things! Or at least be patient enough to wait for a good SS like Skunk2's, DC Sports', or Neuspeed's.

I'd rather go and buy one myself.
