Just wondering if anyone is using the hi/lo HID's ( H4 ) and if so. . how much are they. . i know they are quite a bit more expensive than the regular ones..(which are kinda reasonable these days. .) If anyone has tried them . .got any pics. ?

 

Tehre seems to be 2 diff styles of hylows. One style is a HID bulb for lo and Halogen light for high. The other style is a kit that actually moves the placement of the hid bulb so you get a true HID high beam. Which kind are you talking about?

 

I think HI/LO kits are a waste of money because with HID lighting it is not recommended to turn it on and off rapidly because it will reduce the life of the bulb dramatically. Only reasons for high beams are flashing other vehicles, long windy roads, or off-road use.

A lot of OEM HID systems use BI-XENON Projectors. There's a solenoid in your projector that controls a "shutter" that virtually adjusts your constant LOW BEAM to act as a HIGH beam. These can be found on ebay and they're not plug and play at all.

How does a OEM Bi-Xenon system work?

Very simple, Bi-Xenon means that both high and low beam is created by the same HID bulb. A Bi-Xenon system can be based on reflector and projector design. The latter one is the simplest. Hella has a Bi-Xenon system that has a moveable shield inside a projector unit. This is acomplished by using a spring loaded solenoid (just like in power door locks) or servo motor with 2 positions. Bi-Xenon came on many cars in 2002 as an available option. See OEM HID database for cars with this option. The advantage compared to a traditional projector HID low beam/Halogen high beam is that you get HID low AND high beam. Bi-Xenon systems have additional flash-to-pass separate halogen lamp. The downside with Bi-Xenon systems and traditional low beam Xenon systems is that illumination close to the car is too bright at high speed driving. This is one of the reasons why the "Vario Xenon" system is superior.

Do not confuse OEM Bi-Xenon system with an aftermarked "Bi-Xenon HID kit". This is described under the "HID kit" section.

Correction:

An H4 bulb with both low/high beam capability uses a shield that slides back when the high beam is actuated, which exposes more of the light.

And a hi/lo HID bulb does the same thing. It DOES NOT mean that another bulb is used for its high beam application. It DOES NOT mean that you'll need to light another HID capsule for high beam.

Instead, it is very much like an OEM H4 bulb & similarly a Bi-xenon projectors found in Mercedes, Porsche, etc. When the high beam is actuated, a shield moves out of the way. Which will essentialy reduces the "cutoff" line/effect, and allows more light to stray out into the distance.

 

Oh, and no need to get HID information from a third hand party.

This is where MTK and Skafia gets all of their Ctl-C & Ctrl-V information.

The H4 kit was the one I was speaking of Skafia. Like Marios said. http://www.autolamps-online.com has a high low system for H4's.

The hi/lo system i was talkin bout was the one that physically moves.. . I know of the one that moves the bulb. . but i didn;t know about the one with the sheild angle adjust. . very interseting. . Does anyone have these.. (any of them. .) and if so. . how much were they. . big time $$$$$ i think .

Catz and Bellof uses a system where the actual bulb is moved and not a shield.... Ive seen a bunch that move a shield...

 

with most of those hi/lo kits, there is something electrical that has to move something, like mario said.. there is the kind he showed with the moving shield, and there is the other kind where a solenoid pops the bulb back n forth to hit different sections of the reflector.. the only problem with these kits that ive heard of is the reliability of the electrical stuff involved.. but other than that, they all seem to do their job just fine..

and of course there is the other kind, which usually is an HID bulb for the low beam, and an H1 halogen attached to it for the high beam..
