Default building backup race car....

well, #11 H1 is in no condition to run right now. the cylinder head is at the machine shop being fixed. hopefully will have the car reassembled in a month. we will see how it runs then....

in the meantime, I am not going to be without a car to race. Late last year, I picked up a decent backup car which I was planning on building. finally got around to tearing into it last weekend.

its a 93 Ford Probe GT (Mazda MX-6 clone). it came non running, but with a ton of parts. it was a street car that did a lot of DEs. never raced though. I got the car, a bolt in cage, 12 wheels/tires, and some spares.

a new distributor got it running nicely, along with a tuneup.

it was beautiful inside and out; it was almost a shame to strip it! took 8 hours, but now the interior is out, including most of the sound insulation (20 degrees outside really helped). cage should bolt in this weekend.

that leaves the window net, belts, seat brace, ignition lock, and airbag removal.

Watch out PS-1! this is a nice handling car (Eibach street springs, Tokico Illuminas, Addco rear sway) with decent power (feels like a stock 99-00 SI in power). Only shortcoming is the brakes. they SUCK. way undersized.

if the H1 Civic is not ready or broken, you may see a white Probe GT circulating in PS-1. gonna do me some SE-R hunting

Todd

PS anyone know someone looking for a mint Probe interior (grey), sound system, and ice cold A/C system, point them my way!!

One thing to look out for if you have the V6 is that oil pressure sending units die easily. Don't ask me how me and my ex-girlfriend found out.

<< Damn Reid, how many race car do you have? >>

Well, lets see.....

1. #11 H1 Honda Civic DX-LS. currently on life support. technicians are working on the cylinder head as we speak. I will reassemble and hopefully be racing in a month or two....

2. #7 Lotus Super Seven Super Sprint vintage racer. currently dead. only thing salvageable from the blow up was the block. don't think I'll have this running until at the earliest late fall. really late. boo hoo. this is my favorite to drive!

3. #?? PS-1 Ford Probe GT. currently running, but with no interior. had to drive it up the driveway sitting on a "Baldor" box!

<< was it the 0-man's car? >>

nope. it was a friend of mine, George Kummeth's car. he autocrossed the hell out of it for 3 years then tons of DE's with the local PCA club. car has been through alot. but its ready for more!!!!

<< oil pressure sending units go bad >>

this I would believe; for the last several years, the oil press gauge always reads very low in the normal range. this is OK; i will try to put in a mechanical gauge; until then, if the engine blows, then so be it. i think it actually has good oil pressure; just the guage is reading low. I think it would have blown up long ago due to low oil press if it actually was suffering from low pressure... thanks for the info, though!!!

yah that car is pretty fun. i drove on on sat, a MX6. instead of the stock 160 hp 2.5 it had a JDM version which was a more healthy 200 hp. handling was good, similar to an ITR actually, good lift throttle rotation. and the v6 sounded great. it was only on kumho 712's. but it had good balance, and power. brakes prolly solved by race pad. if i remember it's not a terribly heavy car.

Considering that two of your three racecars have blown engines... and the third has never been raced by you, I would think a working oil pressure gauge should be a higher priority! LOL!

ah ha!!

but I also secretly have a backup for the backup car in the wings....

if the Probe blows, I can run my street car, at least in the DEs. i recently traded the truck to Brian DeVilla straight up for his ----- 96 Cobra Mustang.... can anyone say "American Iron"?

nah. this Cobra is too nice to put up wheel to wheel. its already got Motorsport springs and Tokico Illumina struts. its a nice ride to drive to work (when the white stuff isn't falling".

hmmm. I bet it would be fun on the track????

god, its so nice to step on the gas pedal in 5th gear and actually MOVE. there is nothing like big torque in this world.

so what are you towing the racecars with? or should I say, what will you be towing them with when they work again?

Dad recently bought a 6 horse trailer (5th wheel rig). He also bought a new Chevy 8100 Vortec/Allison 5 speed truck to pull it.

it doesn't even feel my puny trailer behind it. its awesome.

I can borrow it when i need it, as long as I agree to do the maintanence on it and keep it clean and filled up with fuel.

DONE DEAL, baby!!!

oh, and Brian loves my old truck. pulls his Protege like its not even there. so it all worked out well!
