Default already searched...code 17 and vtec troubles on my new swap!!???

ok i looked..there are tons of topics but all the feedback is very vague it seems that no one really know how to get around this...

my ecu is throwing a code 17 which i know has to do with the VSS, my check engine light is always coming on now when i start the car. Now i am still using the same speed sensor that i was using before, but now in a 93 gsr tranny...

this is a b18c swap and problem is that once my check engine light is on, VTEC wont activate. Now do i have to find an electronic VSS and hook it up to a newer cluster to avoid this problem...or is there anyway i can modify my existing mechanical VSS and you my 89 Si Cluster?

I had the same problem, it was real intermitant with mine but as soon as I drove it hard shortly after it would throw the code 17. Anyway what you can do to fix and still keep the cable vss and cable driven cluster. Do you have the electrical vss off of the transaxle that you have? If so you can remove the plastic gear and swap it onto your cable driven vss. Do you know what I mean? The problem is that the differnt gears are not exactly meshing together in lamen terms.

Your welcome, Aaron.

What kind ECU are you using? P28? reason I asked is you need to connect the VSS wire on your ecu to the VSS connection behind your cluster. Even if you have a mechanical VSS on your tranny, the ecu needs to get a signal of some sort from your speedometer that its working. Same principle on cars with a B16motor using a PR3/PWO (mechanical vss)..hope this helps.

Behind your CRX/Civic cluster is a 12 pin plug and 4th pin from the right is a yellow/red wire, that is the VSS wire. Connect that or run (splice a wire from that pin) to the VSS line on your ECU. You can also trace that and see if it leads to a plug in your ECU and simply transfer it to the right location. Unfortunately, I do not have the pin codes for the P28 ECU and they're different on each ECU. PR3 is on plug B-16, P30 is on plug B-10...run a search, it may be available here or post another thread on P28 ECU pinouts. Good luck.
