How do you take out an ECU?
like the topic says.
i'm going to a junkyard and there's a 88-91 hb si that has rear damage of some sort. i'm looking to take some parts out and i want the ECU i'm planning on the MPFI swap sometime soon. so how do you take it out? where exactly is it located?
what else should i salvage from the car?

ECU is located below the footwell carpet on the passenger side. Pull up the carpet, undo the four 10 mm bolts (i think they're 10), pull the cover off, and the ECU will be loose. Press in the clips on the two ecu plugs and pull the wiring harness off. Done.
As fo what else you should get...
Seats front and reard
Gauge cluster (if you have 88-89 and it's 88-89 or if you have 90-91 and it's 90-91)
steering wheel (mm Si steering wheel... way nicer than the dx one
Dash and door panels if they're in nice shape
black trim pieces
that's about all I can think of.

Since you are going to be doing a MPFI swap, you can stock up on some of the smaller parts now.
If the engine harness is still in there, take the resistor box and it's plug and also take the injector plugs too. Make sure that you leave enough wire on them so you can solder to them later on (about 4 inches at the least).

there's accually 3 plugs on the ecu, not 2. you probably would've figured that one out.
you might as well get the entire mpfi swap if the engine is still in there and they let you part it out (you might want to ask first, because they get pissed if you start pulling parts off of an engine and they need to keep it in tact)
1. Intake manifold with Injectors, Throtle body, and all sensors intact
2. Injector resistor box
3. ECU
4. Distributor (the Si dizzy has an extra sensor in it that you will need)
5. engine wire harness (I would suggest getting the entire harness if you can. If you do just get the plugs, get all of the ones listed above plus the distributor plug, and the injector resistor box plug)
If your car doesn't have the factory clock, you might want to see if that parts car has one. just pop the entire vent peice out that the clock is mounted in.
Just ask them how much they want for the entire car, it would probably be cheaper that way, then you can just take it home and strip it bare (you could probably make some of the money back by selling parts you aren't using here in the classifieds section) then get them to buy back the shell when you're done.

thanks for all of the ideas
i only really need the ecu cause i can get a complete si motor for ~$100 withouth ecu...so that's why i'm asking

might as well buy the car off of them
i phoned them this morning asking them about what they have on the car that i could take off and i got a few prices
ECU: spoken for
right side mirror: $90
rear hub assembly: $65
seats (front only): $550
so it looks like i'm not gonna drive 45 min to go get an ECU for my car....
they're such a rip off.....btw those are canadian prices
Dude that's a total rip off! 90 for a mirror!?!?!?!
550 for seats????? are they on crack?
good luck in finding other parts!

btw, if you want to check out one of these auctions, go to http://home2.iaai.com/ then click on locations to find one near you. for a fee (I think it was about $50.00), you can bid yourself, or do like I did and befriend a wrecking yard owner and get him to bid for you.
