If I took off my cat and put in a test pipe... Is it bad for the engine? Do you gain more HP? What kinda of gain? thanks... and also I know about emmisions test, and we dont have them here in south florida..

 

Without the catalytic convertor you'll only release more hazardous waste into the air, but just like you guys in florida we also don't have emissions tests anymore(wonder why?). The benefits would be increased HP since the exhuast no longer has to go through a filter, but not much. Your idling and gas mileage may be effected so proper tuning is crucial.

to answer your question, a cat will not hurt a motor due to lack of back pressure. tuning will be affected but this can be taken care of with a few runs on a dyno.

if you don't have emissions in your state, go without a cat. the difference in emissions in your vehicle is not going to really hurt the environment.

 

That's right. The manufacturers only put them on to add weight and increase their costs. (Sorry, couldn't help myself)

 

they are there for a reason, quit making something that you could avoid, smog.
I always kinda get upset when i hear about people doing it for like 3hp on their d16y8's and because they like the pissed-off-bee/fartcan/ricer exhaust sound

whether or not our civic's have a catalyic convertor has no influence on the smog some of you see in your cities.

and if you think a car will not run better with a testpipe than you're mistaken...or are racecars running cat's these days...as a way to increase performance?

What kind of gain? I believe only a little, but you will lose some torque.

 

so ur saying hydrocarbons and excessive nitrogen in our atmosphere isnt creating smog?! you are really misinformed. on our cars its not just to add weight and serve no purpose its to keep the environment alive. i dont see why someone would sacrafice the atmosphere for 3hp. on a personal account i gained more power from a free flow cat that i did with a test pipe. plus when you look at racecars today most are without economy and gas mileage in mind that is why they run test pipes.

 

if your not willing to sacrafice a LITTLE smog for HP then you dont belong behind the wheel of a honda. go get a mustong or somthing that puts out evan more smog.

 

I won't bring the "debatable" smog issue into this, thats a personal decision, but i have some truth to share.

you can believe me fully, slightly, or not at all. But I believe I have a right to express this, since I own a dyno and have dyno'd thousands of cars.

#1 Point. A stock GSR with a stock cat...then you REMOVE THE cat...you will gain about 5 WHP from the removal. Not much at all...NOT WORTH IT!
#2 Point. On our fully built 2 liter killer's (all motor) a cat will make about a 15-20 WHP difference.
#3 Point. A TURBO car from us making 373 WHP at 12 PSI with no cat, and then placing a 3" high flow cat on it changed the WHP by about 40. On a 500 HP car, it makes about a 50-60 WHP difference.

The more air the motor want's to push, the more lose the cat will make.

I just wanted to stop by here and spread some truth to this debate that has gone off into SMOG problems...

A guy in my neighborhood tried to break all the **** in his catalytic converter apart with something he stuck in there (while it was mounted on the car)... to get all the "debris" out he started his car and revved his engine, blowing the cat guts all over the street. needles to say, I was told that night when I got off work that there was tons of commotion because his neighbor (a mechanic) saw this and called 911 and told them the guy had blown the poison cat guts all over the street. Kinda funny the guy was that stupid
