OK, Ive been looking into a catch can for my motor I'm building and ran into this link from CSpeedRacing

However it says since the can was unbaffled they filled it full of steel wool. This seems like it would be a bad thing to have oxidized steel floating around. Any ideas? This seems counterproductive.

 

Ifyou aren't comfy with steel wool, you can use copper wool. It's the mesh that traps the oil vapor.

 

sees like a very easy concept to reproduce without the bling bling.

Nope...just the only place they could mount it

 

so two rubber lines one going from the pcv and one from the intake mani? and have them routed to a can full of steel wool, sounds like a 15 dollar job to me

 

I used the copper wool scours. A couple bucks for a pair at walmart.

yup, its really easy to do for cheap. It can easily be done w/ a mason jar or something of the sort. It just won't look as good as this one.

The steelwool won't oxidize because it will be soaked in the oil that it traps. Should't rust any faster than your crankshaft.

 

to each his own (don't worry, i'm not an all show / no go type guy). I just personally prefer things that look a little more professional than a mason jar zip tied to the frame rail. But I don't think i'd fork out the big bucks for that one in the picture either.

 

i remember reading a couple of different places that the idea place to mount it is anywhere thats LOWER than where it comes out the back of the block (at the pcv valve). that might have something to do with it, seeming how low they put it.

 

that sounds wrong... where did you hear that? the block outlet is usually way lower than the PCV valve

my catch can is mounted higher than the block outlet with the PCV valve ontop.
