Default clutch/transaxle

My 1988 Honda LXi has 204 k miles and needs a new clutch assembly. The car is in a decent shape other than the clutch assembly (chattering/worn). I plan to do the clutch work myself but I am wondering if I should also attempt to replace the transaxle with a remanufacured one, while it is off of the car to "shoot two birds with one stone". I have no idea how long an average honda transaxle would last? On the average side, do you know how long it would last?? I suspected that the previous owner was kind of hard on the transaxle and car, but I am not 100% sure. I am concerned that the transaxle would break down in little while after I replaced the clutch assembly, then I would have to take it out again?? How much would a re-manf transaxle cost? Any suggestions. Thanks.

What I mean with transaxle is transmission. I am not sure if its called transaxle, but what I mean is a typical transmission. Its 5 speed manual. Jim

depending on where you are, you should be able to find one for definitely no more than $1000.00.

just check around local garages and salvage yards.

If it's working fine then I wouldn't bother replacing it. Hondas manual trannies (3rd gen, at least) are pretty damn good. I've never done a single thing to mine (see mileage in sig) except change the fluid about every 30-40k, and it's completely original including the clutch. Still one of the smoothest shifting manual trannies I've driven in a LONG time. No grinds whatsoever, all syncros work perfect, and no leaks or any kind. It's always shifted smooth, but seems even smoother now after I changed the fluid to Honda MTL -- good stuff! . It's up to you though, but if it were me, I wouldn't.

Thank you. It helps to know about it. It looks like that I will use Honda MTL after I change the clutch assembly. Original clutch after 311k miles - that's impressive. It looks like that the previous owner did not take a good care of the car, but I am hoping I will be able to make it better.

Thanks again.

Jim
