D-series Tranny Gurus: CrxSI tranny rebuild-need info and guidance...
Thanx to Scott
( Beta13) I am now the proud owner of a L3-9 Si tranny. My plans are to do a D16a6 build up ( something akin to what B18C5-EH2 is doing) and I want rebuild my tranny. Since I have never attempt this before I am asking for a little guidance.
Info:
'89 crx hf ( stock engine and tranny)
'90 crx si tranny
I will be swapping in an a6 engine, what I want is a tranny geared for "spirited" driving that also can endure the rigors of daily highway commuting.
What I need to know is what synchros to get,is there such thing as a 'rebuild' kit..
How hard is it to DIY or am I better off turning it over to a professional.
Any advice is welcome....
Thank in advance
Chuck
PS...yes I did searches and came back somewhat more confused and curious at the same time.

The cost of a rebuild would overun just pruchasing a newer japanese/european trans. If there are no noticable problems with it as is, especially for daily driving I wouldn't recommend throwing away money there.
A valid point...but the tranny is *questionable*..based on description that it was grinding in 3rd, ( scott was truthful of what he knew about it) so a rebuild canidate it has become. ( if you guys remember a pal wanted to trade a $2000.00 Sony HD TV for a "performance tranny"...
) Since this is very new territory for me
I'm asking advice from those who have experience in matters as this.
Oh and by "spirited" I mean the occasional trip to the local drag strip as well as the usual sunday back road twistes ( maybe even a cone chase or too
)

OK, first , it's easy to trow 2000$ in a performance tranny, especially if you include the clutch as a part of the trany itself. ATS does very powerfull final drive, I can't remember the ratio for shure but I think it's 4.7, witch is enough to eat any stock b16 running in town. now there is sinchro availlable almost in any Honda dealer, they have them in stock, they run for aroud 35 $ each. You need Honda MTF, manual trany fluid. Get a look in the post I made, you'll find one with the word Tranny hard to get in reverse after rebuilt, get a look at it, you'll find a nice shceme showing you all the parts in good size. The real guys around here is MistaBone, he know more about trany than most of us.
search in the post, There is LSD you can put in, Final drive, Hybrid tranny with ZC parts. I warn you however, it's not simple, it's not because many of us talk about trany building that it's easy as pie to do!, you need a lot of tool ( bearing puller etc etc etc) tranny shop usually rebuild them for around 500$ including parts, depending on part's to change !
hope this guide you a bit, again there is a shitload about trany here since we all breack them in peice !!
see ya

ATS does have a 4.73 FD and you can get it at OPM Motorsports, Title sponsor of the East Coast Honda Challenge and owned by Speed World Challenge driver Tom Fowler.
