Default Idle is eratic during extreme cold weather

And you guys thought you were rid of me ! Sorry BUT, I'm baaaaack .

I did a search several different ways with no luck (imagine that) so............. After my '91 EX 5 speed has fully warmed up the idle races up and down during very cold weather. It has the stock air box and no I still haven't put the spacer on yet (long, long story). It is a little embarassing when sitting at a stoplight and people are staring at you like you are some sort of idiot. Well OK, so I'm used to that but it is still annoying. It starts fine and the fast idle works just fine when cold, no other symptoms and it doesn't do it all the time. Any ideas ?

My 94 Accord EX-R has the same problem once a while during extreme cold weather as well. I've been trying to find what the problem is but not much luck. However, when the RPM races up and down, if i rev the engine, it will idle like normal again.
My friend's 92 had the same problem too, and he asked his mechanic about it, and the mechanic (NOT Honda certified) said it's the oxygen sensor. My friend replaced it and said it doesn't do that anymore.

I don't know if this is the problem, but maybe someone can verify.

Our Integra does it too. I've narrowed it down to probably the O2 sensor. Cleaned almost every sensor in the intake path.

It has to be something that gives a reading to the ECU when it is cold because the ECU is trying to program the air/fuel mixture correctly...

Mine did that too several years ago. It was actually a pretty common thing (on EFI 3rd gens, at least), and what it was was the EACV (electronic air control valve). Not sure if the F22 is set up the same way as the A20, but it's got to be similar. Weird though, it seemed to fix itself after it did it a few times, lol. Another from the junkyard is only a couple bux though

Could be IACV, FITV, MAP, or EGR. Check those sensors first. Do you have a Helms? If not I can try and post the right values and how to check later on.

The question is, did he ever get that TB spacer working?

No Helms manual.....yet. So yeah, if you wanted to post those readouts that would be cool. Thanks. I suppose I could rob sensors off the '92 but I'm trying hard not to cannibalize it. Once you start you don't stop. My kid is PO'd because I wouldn't let him have a part off it for his, life's a bitch.

TB spacer is sitting there waiting for warmer weather now (no heat in garage and I'm too old for that crap without heat). It took back seat to Xmas; 2 PC "rebuilds"; 2 PC "builds" (including the one I'm on right now) and a major upgrade of the family PC. Plus I scored a 454 Rat motor last month for my '62 so I have been scavenging parts to swap that in after I get the floor pans fixed. And going from a 283 to a 468CID (when it's finished) necessitates a few other "minor" driveline changes. I also finally got a mig welder, no tanks yet but I'm gettin' there so the floor pan fix is getting closer as well. On top of that things have been crazy at work and I have been doing 2 to 3 hours of "homework" on my PC at night just so I could work on it without interruption, then I e-mail it back in to work.

Most likely your MAP sensor. Possibly IACV.

Uhm, what is an Accord EX-R???

I would also like to know.

I would also like to know.
It's the canadian version of Accord Ex. Exactly the same. Just the name.
EX-R = EX in US,
EX in Canada = LX in US,
LX in Canada = DX in US.
No DX in Canada.
That's good for 3rd, 4th and 5th gens.
3rd gens US LX-i were EX-i in Canada.
SE-i were same everywhere to my knowledge.

I've had this problem before on my EX, and a friend of mine on his LX, and we both had faulty O2 sensors. Changed to NGK and solved the problem

It has started again since my tranny swap. ECU threw 2 error codes: 1st: Misfirring distrbutor, 2nd: EGR valve.

I haven't disconnected the EGR yet. (reminds me I have to) I don't expect it to solve the problem.

I do expect the distributor to be at fault. Another friend of mine who had a 91 EX experienced exactly the same problem, and solved it when he changed his distributor. I should be doing it soon. I'll see and maybe give news if the thread isn't too far down.

To check IAC, disconnect connector, measure the resistance on the valve, should be between 8-15 ohms. Check for continuity between ground and each terminal of the IAC, should be no continuity on any.

To check FITV, while warming up car, remove the cover of the FITV(2 philips screw) and place finger over valve seat, should feel air flow. When it gets hot and fan comes on there should be NO air flow.

Your car also has IAB(intake air bypass) system. I'll have to scan this part, kind of complicated to check and you need vacuum gauge and pump etc. It's behind your passenger side headlight. Try this though: Pull the plug off and check for voltage, should be battery voltage with car on.

did you do the throttle body coolant bypass mod? if you have that might be your problem....fast idle sensor and the cold start idle speed

Skipped over a few lines, eh ? No spacer yet and I had the bypass passage machined into it for when I finally do put it on.
