92 JDM H22A Vtec: 96 Octane/5W/30 Non Synthetic recommended by Honda...
Hi All,
This is my first post so try not to flame if this is old news... I contacted Honda
NZ yesterday to find out the recommended oil/fuel for my 92 jdm vtec (200hp JDM H22A) and got
the following response... any thoughts/disagreements with this?
"That model Prelude with V-Tec is the exception to our rule that most
Honda's run on 91 Octane Fuel. You should definitely be using 96 Octane.
On oil, our recommended oil is 5W/30 oil. We do not recommend any make
of Synthetic Oil for any Honda Engine.
Since 1988 we have been importing genuine Honda Oils from the USA. The
engine oil we import is labelled Honda "FEO". FEO is a Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) grading that denotes that independent testing
has confirmed the oil has significant low friction or Fuel Efficiency
properties. As well as being fuel efficient the oil gives significant
protection at "Startup" especially during cold weather.
The only other readily available 5w/30 oil known to me that matches the
Honda Specification is Caltex Energy oil. Castrol do a 5W/30 but I believe
it has a significant Synthetic content. Shell also do one but it is hard to
find."

we just had a jdm h22 accord on the dyno running 93 octane a spoon chip and base timing of 22 deg and no detonation on the dyno..... also they rate fuel in japan differnt than they do here. there its the ron rating, here its ron/mon dont know what any of that means but just b/c they run 96 octane there dosnt mean that our 93 octane is any worse
96 RON =~ 93 octane here (RON+MON/2)
*edit* Equations own me!

I use mixtures between 93 and 100 octane & 10w/30. Car definately pulls better on 100 octane.
from what I remember, a stock engine will run stronger on higher octane, but the richer fuel can also cause damage faster to the engine as well.
I was at the Honda dealer last month and in the parts department they had a placemat on the counter which had reccomended honda oil weights.

Have anything to do with open and closed deck?
I have an H23 that is closed deck and Honda recommends 5w-30. I also wonder why they recommend 10w30 for the 93-96 vtec.

With the 5th gen's the recommend 5w-30 for lower temp areas, and 10w-30 for areas that the temp doesn't go below 20 degrees. The 10W will protect the engine better and burn less (since it's thicker), but gets too thick at temps below 20 degrees for what honda considers "safe to use to keep wear to a minimum"
