Default Dirty Intake/throttle body buildup....ideas?

my intake is clean right up to the butterfly on my throttle body, after that there is this black, greasy, buildup inside the throttle body. Car runs fine but I was wondering what this is, and what causes it. Does it hamper performance? something wrong? are the runners like this too?

can/shoul i clean it with some air intake & throttle body cleaner?

i've heard cleaning this sort of stuff out can do more harm than good....

any input is appreciated!

TIA

When I had my Accord, I had a problem with gunk in the throttle body. I just sprayed some gum out throttle body cleaner in it and all was good. Of course I'm oversimplifying it, but basically that's what my specific problem boiled down to.

Its called Carbon Build up. Normal on all cars to have build up, but sometime associated with these problems
-loss of power
- poor fuel economy
- rough idle
- hesitation at slower speeds
- hard to start
Disamble your throttle body and clean it with carb or intake cleaner.
Just to name a few but carbon build up can be found in these places also
intake manifold, valves, piston, injectors, and yes eve turbo turbines.

An oil catch can should solve the carbon buildup problem, as it will remove any oil from ciculating back into the IM (which can also end up dirtying up the TB).

go to the store, but carborateur cleaner. take off your intake pipeing. Start your car, and spray that **** in there. your car will try to die. so stop, let it get going again and spray that sit in htere agian. then take a wire brush and clean that **** out. then stop the car. scrub more, spray the **** down in there, let it sit, then start the car (it will be a rough start) . now most of the carbon build up is gone, and only takes 10 minutes. you should change your oil afterwards. the smell and smoke coming from oyur exahust is normal with the carb cleaner it will go away in a minute.

StyleTEG is correct, an oil catch can would solve the problem. The cause of the oily/greasy build up inside the intake manifold and the throttle body is caused by the recirculation of blow-by gases. Blow-by gases are recirculated (for emissions reasons) through the PCV system. The blow-by gases contain small oil vapor droplets which collect in the intake manifold. An oil catch can traps and collects the oil droplets before they are recirculated back into the intake manifold, which in turn will help to prevent the build up. I have an oil catch can and I highly recommend it . You can go to my website at http://www.geocities.com/bretq/DIY_O...tructions.html for further information.

When you do this, isn't it bad that all that buildup is going into the engine? Anybody else just spray carb cleaner in the TB and intake manifold and let it go into the motor?

The buildup should burn off, and the carb cleaner is flamable so it should also burn off.

But you will do a much better job if you just remove the throttle body and scrub away.

i think it just burns in the combustion chamber, then blows out the exhaust. all burned up and smelly

yeah...just take off your throttlebody and spray it down with either carb or brake cleaner. that should clean it right up.

wouldn't all that loose carbon and junk get caught in the valves or somewhere else that it shouldn't be and could cause problems?

thanks for all the info!

I had this problem on one of my old cars and i actually took off the throttle body and intake manifold. and sprayed about 3 cans of carb and choke cleaner into it and wiped out as much as i could after.. it was amazing how much crap builds up in it.

I have also heard of what deepgreengsr said about spraying while its running but choose not to do that because if you spray too long it will burn out your rings..

i was pondering the idea of putting a fuel filter on the PCV hose going to the intake so it will trap all the oil....but i have 115k so its a little late to start doing anything......

You guys should try to use some Mopar top end cleaner. I have done this to numerous cars and it makes the car work like new again. Pretty much the same stuff that people call carburator cleaners and things of that sort. Don't hesitate to do it though, it rocks. I'll probablly do mine one day.
