HID question
My co worker wants to sell me a set of used HID (phillips ballast and unknown bulb)
this is the kit that APC buy from an asian importer and slaps their tag on it for resale. (no flames please)
has any1 tired this kit? if so, how do you like it?
the bulbs are D2R's, and i have an integra
according to my limited knowledge on HID's, i'm suppose to use the D2S bulbs because of the projectors. How would these (the D2R's) work compared to the ones i'm suppose to use (D2S's) when mounted in my projector housing?
could some1 help me out?
thanks

the APC kit is pretty good.. i have a few friends with that kit.. but D2R will not work well in a projector housing.. it cuts off 1 half of the beam completely..
looking at the beams from up high.. the projectors throw out kinda like 2 V's
V V like that kinda.. but with the D2R's.. it will be like this
\| |/ its not good.. but i suggest you buy some 9006 fitted D2S bulbs.. OR you can just scrape the black stuff off the D2R bulb with a razor or something..

How do I convert A D2R bulb to an almost D2S?
I went to Wal-Mart and found the 3M Auto-Pak WetorDry Automotive Sandpaper (it has 220, 320, 400, and 600 grit paper) and i bought 3M 1500 grit paper. Then I bought, 3M rubbing compound fine cut to remove 1500 grit scratches. Also, use masking tape to cover the base of the bulb and the end of the bulb so water and any foregin parts do not get anywhere they do not belong.
1. Sand the ceramic paint of the D2R off with 400 grit sandpaper. Be careful and dont rub too hard and dont expect to get it all off right away. Patience and a steady hand is key.
2. Then use the 600 grit to go over the areas where the ceramic paint is/was. Do not sand any place that did not have the old ceramic D2R paint.
3. Next, use the 1500 grit paper and go back over the areas again. This is the longest part. This is the part that you can repeat. Do not repeat the above steps. The paper in the above steps will just make the scratches worse. I used a very little drop of water on the sandpaper and rubbed the D2R while it was wet. This helped alot. After, the first time using the 1500 grit dry, repeat with 1500 grit wet. After you feel that you cant do anymore or that you are making it worse, then proceed to the next step
4. Use a very small amount of the Rubbing compound and spread it using a clean cotton terry cloth. Just put enough to make a thin layer over the areas where the stripe was. To remove the rubbing compound use a clean terry cloth. To remove any film and to clean it in general, use isopropyl alcohol and a sterile natural cotton swab(better to use) or a q-tip.
5. The last step, which i didnt do but others have, is to take a dremel and attach a cotton polisher. Dont turn it up much at all otherwise you might shatter the bulb. But this should help alot. I didnt do this step. My bulb looked scratched after i was done and was extremely worried. BUt when i put it into to my projector along side the my other projector which had a regular D2S, the beam pattern and brightness were the same. So even if the bulb still looks terribly scratched dont worry aobut it b/c there is NO WAY that you can get it to look like the rest of the bulb. Just stay in the areas where the ceramic paint is and you will be fine. Dont scratch up anywhere else.
u can use that method, or do what i did with a D2R bulb.. just use a razor and scrape it off.. the glass where the paint was will be a little scuffed looking, but it doesnt affect the light at all if anything..

i'm now thinking about applying a thin layer of epoxi over the once-covered-with-ceramic area to make it clear. How do you think it would work? Can epoxi handle the heat? will the bulb blow? thanks
