Default b16 for my 96 ex

Please no flamers this is a TECH question.
did a search.

I'm planning to do b16 swap in my 96 civic. I don't understand the concept of obd's but what i understand that their're wiring codes for different models. I believe i have a obdII car, (please correct me if i'm wrong anywhere). So i have to get a b16A2 because that is OBDII, if i choose to go with a b16A1 i would have to switch out my distributor, and starter and other such stuff (am i correct)

Thanks for you help

b16a's from Japan are OBD1, B16A2's are in the Del Sols and B16A3's in 99-00 Si's are OBD2. Each ecu has different sensors to look for and are basically separate programs. OBD2 looks for a knock sensor, 2 o2 sensors, etc.

Edit- 96 and up Civics are OBD2, 96 and up Tegs are OBD2, except 97 R, which is OBD1

If you get an OBD2 engine, which you should for easier tuning, you'll need an OBD2 to OBD1 wiring harness to run a OBD1 ECU

Edit- you have a OBDII car, my bad...don't need conversion unless you drop OBD1 in

correct me if i'm wrong but i thought that b16A2 is from a 99-00 si and is OBD2.

Ok, i'm kinda lost here.

So which engine would i need to work with my civic, without swaping out parts.

I don;'t know if they are ONLY from Japan, but they were the OBD1 B16 engines. B16A1 was the first gen B16 which is OBD-0 and the cable tranny. The B16A3 is the only stock B16 engine available in the US, in the del sol, si, etc.

So if i get b16A3 for my 96 ex, i would be set.
i won't need to change the dist. and other stuff.

jdm engines don't have a last number. they're all b16a. the b16a2 is obd2, out of the 99-00 si. the b16a3 is obd1, out of the del sol vtec. for a 96 civic i'd recommend the b16a2 because its the easiest to wire up.

For clarification an engine out of an Si is of course a B16A2 as stated on the block and OBD-II so obviously this will work or you can go with a JDM B16A out of a 96+ Civic and that will work. You don't have to stay OBD-II but it's illegal to have a street car with an engine older than the car in it in most places. I know that you can reuse your EX harness on the B16A engine, and your option for the ECU are:

1) Get an OBD-II to OBD-I harness and run an OBD-I ecu which you can rechip
2) Get a JDM OBD-II ecu

These are the two easiest options IMO...being that I read the ECU for a 99-00 Civic uses different ECU plugs that the 96-98 Civic so your EX wiring harness might not plug up to an Si ECU. Someone correct me where I am wrong.

99-2000 si is obd2b

your car is obd2a.

compatibility is an issue.

Alright, I'm going to tell you what you need to do. Listen to me, and only me.

There are two ways that you can solve your ecu question.

1. Find an OBD2 b16a ecu (96-97 del Sol) or a JDM ITR ECU (96-97)
2. Chip an OBD1 civic ex/si ecu and run an ecu jumper (recommended)

Those are the easiest things to do.

When you do the swap, you're going to use your EX harness.

Use this for further info: http://mycivic.kicks-***.net/6gen/

btw, the 99-00 Si came with the B16A2

get a 99-00 Si engine. You need to rewire the CKF and extend the primary O2 sensor wires on your EX harness. Other than that, there are no other wiring modifications necessary, it will plug in 100%. I run a 97 Del Sol vtec P30 and it runs great.

I installed a 97 B16a2 from a del sol in to my 96 coupe, it was straight plug and play...a monkey could do it.
