Default Fun with filters > oil filter and fuel filter

If you're like me, you've been wondering what's inside the oil and fuel filter.

Wonder no more.

Obviously, the Isuzu and Honda filters are the EXACT SAME. After looking over the design quite a bit I've reached some conclusions.

1.) The filter element is okay, but not wonderful.
2.) The filter has a good bypass valve.
3.) The end caps are well designed and won't break (like cheap filters).
4.) I've since bought the small version of the Hamp filters. I will chop one open shortly.

The fuel filter is nothing really. Mine was very clean at 30k miles. It's nothing more than a paper filter.

Im interested in seeing the HAMP chopped apart. How did you take it apart? I've used up many hamps already.

Dremel got it open eh. I tried to cut mine open but all I had was a hacksaw...so I got tired of sawing and just tried to bust it open with a BFH! That was not successful. BTW Nice pics

Reminds me of what I saw at the local Acura dealership... They have a torn apart Honda filter next to a torn apart Fram filter. Let's just say I'm glad that I've never used Fram stuff on my car.

The hamp has already been chopped up... I wish I could find the link. But the dallas prelude owners (i think that is who it was) did that too a bunch of filters.

interesting they should have that, since Canadian-made Honda filters are actually the exact same as Fram filters (cardboard endcaps, etc.). When I used to buy Honda filters, I would always specify one made in USA, which are made by Filtech, and is probably what that one pictured above is.

yeah that Hamp above looks almost no different than the US Honda....although I understand the filter element is better (increased surface area).

The smaller ones keep Vtec oil pressures up, which was a major concern for myself.

I hear Honda is phasing out the Filtech and going with a Fram unit now? I don't know. I'm using a Bosch and a Mobil1 ($11 !!!) on other cars, and look forward to chopping those apart as well.

edit btw:

If you look on the right of my picture, you'll see a SuperTrak special $0.99 filter. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. At 2500 miles the glue had already seperated from the end caps. Basically it wasn't filtering anything.

I've since switched to STP filters, good stuff and only costs about $3. It's even blue just like the Honda filters.

Yeah, but at $10-$12....I don't think so, not for a oil filter. I much rather use the Purolator Premium PureOne for $5-$7.

Go with the $2 Walmart filter, exact samething as the STP and made by Champion labs.
