UPDATE: 00-721 ... and questions
It has not been found; however, the insurance company has made an offer of $19,xxx plus tax, making it just shy of $22,000. Now, what is the deal with tax? Do I have to hand this over the the government? Do I have to file some crazy paperwork?
Also, I had a fix-it-ticket for my tags not being up to date. The car was registered. Anyone know what to do?

I think that is a standard reimbursement package. When you paid for the car, you also paid tax on the car...the insurance company takes that into account when writing you a check. HTH
So you think I get to keep it? Sweet if so. I only owe 11-13k on the car.
Looks like I'm getting a hot tub and a cam kit for the M!

19K + tax, thats pretty good. not sure about the tax issue, but you paid the tax initially when you bought the car(you had to provide proof when you registered the car, atleast you do in NY) so you get that back. thats how they got the 22k. Then next car you get you will have to provide proof that you paid the tax in order to register the new car, and if anything happens to that new car, the same will occur and you will get that tax back as well.
as far as the paperwork goes, the insurance should take care of all of that, but I guess that just depends on the company you are with and the circumstances. With my situation, my interior was stolen, the insurance totalled the car out. I paid the loan off, so I owned the car, so they are giving me a check for what the car is worth. They are also taking care of getting the car retitled, then all I have to worry about is getting it registered again. so far, I havnt really had to touch any paperwork other than submit receipts for the parts I had on the car so they can declare the value.
