it just bugs me that i have to stomp the throttle past 3500 rpm on each shift to get any decent acceleration just driving around pulling from stop light to stop light?
i mean the car is fast, but seems only fast when over the 2000 rpm range? and just seeing what it could be? or something i can do to make it not be so weak in the 0-2000rpm range?
btw its 90crxsi 156,000 miles, stromung exhaust, locash ecu and everything else is stock on the engine, its maintained pretty good, i had valves adjusted recently has new oil change, good new plugs, air filter, good spark plug wires etc...
but maybe thats just how these cars are? cause it seems like it was like that also on my previous crx too, but even if it is a weak part of the engine, there has to be a way to have some more kick in the lower rpm range, so any tips would be welcome?

Try getting a mustang with a 5.0L engine.
Anyway, I was gonna say an intake would help with the throttle response a bit... we just dont have much low end power.
it is true, you cant find the same low end torque compared to that of a mustang, I have driven both but I prefer reliability and something a little more dependable

your asking for torque...much like most honda's crx's dont offer that....
i say your ECM is not optimised for your set-up. try a stock one.

If you want torque, buy a jackson racing S/C !! They kick *** down low, but they don't do so well up top, but if torque is what you desire, then that will definatly do it !! My friends crx was a beast down low, but nitrous prevaled in the 1/4 mile..

you mentioned the CAI, and actually i was going to finally install the one i got today, but its just one from air dynamic racing on ebay for about $60, and i will see how it is today.
i am happy with my crx, i mean it has its strong points and its weak points, but i just pay attention to any weak points that i could improve, and the low end rpm is just one of those areas needing improvement.
i guess its just not one of those cars that you just stomp on the gas, and it just jerks and pulls forward, instead with a crx it seems like you have to wait for rpms to build, and just speed shift and keep stomping on the gas.
actually one thing i need to check is if my timing is ok, cause i have'nt had that checked in a while, so maybe it could be that, and as far as my locash modded ecu, i remember after putting that in, it just seemed better not worse, but again it might only improve the high rpms not low.
weak points i have noticed on 88-91 crx si's would be :
1. rough ride on bumpy torn up roads (which can be improved with better shock/spring combo)
2. weak under 2k rpm (which can be improved with modifications)
3. water leaks (which can be fixed)
4. can't think of anymore off the top of my head, lol
strong points of a 90 crx si that i have noticed :
1. quick handling around corners
2. you can brake and stop easily due to the light weight of the car
3. reliable
4 good gas mileage
5. its fast enough for me, and even better with mods
6. nice platform for car audio creativity
7. it loves going 90mph and beyond
8. nice seating position and look from interior and exterior
9. (i could go on and on..............................................., but basically i never even
have thoughts of having any other cars, and its been my 3rd crx and only car since 1991)
the bottom line is, that i can find more strong points than weak points for as what i am looking for in a car, and the few weak points it has, does'nt effect me

It is 1.6 liters. It's not made to have torque, just high RPM. But my 4-2-1 header improved low end more than anyother mod i have.
My 88 crx was nuts below 4k before i got the header
, but the stronger top end now is cool
. Cam gear was the best $100 ive spent (put the power aywhere!)

Perhaps your timing belt has slipped a notch or too, changing where you low points in reference to where your dist. is located and where your cam is, I would probally take off dist. cap, place motor at TDC and go one for one and see iof it is lined up correctly. Also the lines on your stock cam gear have to be exactly angled with head line, not evan across. Just my 2 cents

i am amazed at the difference it made after putting in my first CAI, its kind of generic, its from ebay, but it said air dynamic racing on the package i got, i installed it on saturday, and i did'nt expect it to be such a difference!, cause i always heard people say that it did'nt do much, but it did a lot.
i was told the modified ecu i have would work well with either an intake or header, and it makes my accleration so much faster and easier, plus it sounds like a bigger engine, i love it, ......................now i could only imagine what a header and cam would do!!!!
really the low end rpms don't bother me at all, i was just posting to see what to do to improve it, but really i don't mind shifting at higher rpms, its fun that way.

oh, also i cleaned the throttlebody plate with stp throttle/choke cleaner, it was all full of gunk, and i sprayed WD40 around the throttle cable, and doing those things really took part in making the difference i feel.
next thing i will do is check the timing, get fuel injectors cleaned, and get a header and cam, then i will be plenty happy with the power, .......................then on to the suspension tuning, lol

i dont know.
i have:
CAI
4-2-1
Bosal Catback
gutted cat
93 oct
and i have nice low and mid.. my top end SUCKS!!!!!!!
tonight i raced a 99 GS i/e and and 95 Prelude i/e and whooped on both BUT 3rd gear for the d16a6 is a bitch! cause they started creeping slowly back by 4th they were even and we shut down.

what really sucks is that when i speed shift and accelerate as fast as i can, my third gear always grinds
, it sucks, but it has 156,000 miles on it, so i can't expect it to be perfect.

You mentioned you only have a exhaust. Well you need to complete the bolt on cycle and get a intake and header. It will make a noticable difference and give you more power down low. You will feel it trust me. Spend the best money and get an AEM CAI and DC headers.

thanks for all the replies, .................and yeah, if you look above i did get get an intake (full CAI) and put it on last weekend, and it totally made a big difference, and now its on to the header or cam
these cars react so good to different mods, it gets better with each new thing you put on...........................btw, i am not new at crx's, i am just very late at doing any kind of engine mods, cause whenever i had money i would use it towards other stuff (stereo, looks, etc..), but after 12 yrs of driving 3 different rex's, i finally put on a damn intake, lol, probably cause i was happy enough with the stock power, and also $230 for a AEM was always too much for me, but now i suddenly want to put more money into engine mods

what the hell does the k20 have to do with this topic? who cares! I have the same thing to say, you can only pull so hard regardless of mods in low end, since the torque rating is already low. Do what I do, hit the redline yO!
Yeah, now that you have a intake and exhaust, getting a header will only help more. And to top it off, if you get a good cam, you will really notice another level of performance. Cause the engine is like a water pump and getting all these mods will make your engine work even better. You should really be going fast with the addition of a header and cam.
