Default Anyone baffle their OEM pan?

I am just thinking out loud here. Trying to save myself the $250 for the Mugen piece. Isn't the Mugen pan just an OEM with baffles in it? Oil capacity is the same correct? I have access to a welder with someone who knows how to use it at my work but hasn't done something like this for our import caa's. Is it pretty straightforward? Only thing on the search function that related to my question was this topic but obviously there wasn't much input. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=189522

Both the Spoon & Mugen are both modified OEM pans.

damn.. looks pretty complicated. well i just found out what the baffled pan does, and is it worth the effort??? unless your road racing, i think stock is good. unless you have some time and patients.

Yup, I've got a Mugen pan ... but if I'd had the time I'd have done it myself.

Find a pic of the mugen pan and just duplicate it, but make sure it's clean and painted before installing it.

I can't really find a good pic other than the one at http://www.jdmhondaparts.com under their Mugen section.

I cant find ANY good pics , been looking for awhile now
250 for a modded OEM pan is steep , I'd rather do it myself anyway....

We'll have to upload the pics again tonight. They were deleted a while back.

Thanks,
Victor

Yeah let's see these pics so i can take a peek and know what i am up against. If it looks like i can't do the job right then i will spend the $250 on the Mugen. I would rather be safe than sorry. But if it looks decently easy then i will give it a shot.

So which pan did you decide to go with and was there a reason other than cost??

I think George went with the Mugen piece if i remember correctly. Spoon is just too bling and you pay for that. Not much of a difference i doubt in the design of them. Fill me in here George!

I gave George first pic, so he took the MUGEN. It had a little more work into it. I took the SPOON. AS for the price, it seems the MUGEN "SHOULD" have been more money... But as for doing the same thing in the long run, put your money on MUGEN.

Thanks,
Victor - who is still looking for the pics of the pans

Mugen on left, Spoon on right. The Spoon unit wasn't painted, thus started to rust, since it sat in my garage for a bit. Not sure if this was typical of Spoon, NOT to paint, but I ended up with it on my R and haven't had any problems on or off track.

Thanks,
Victor

Hmmm....does anyone have a pic of a stock ITR oil pan to compare the 2 Victor has posted? I want to see any visual differences before i pull it off. I have never seen the inside of a stock B series pan.

You sure that one on the right is the spoon. I saw a spoon one at a local shop and the welds looked as if from a TIG welder and a LOT cleaner. Those are some pretty shitty looking welds.

Glad this came up. I wanted to do this a year ago and forgot all about it. Thanks for the pics Victor.

I would rather just buy the mugen pan, I got mine for less than $250. The amount of time it would take me to make a baffle for my OEM oil pan, I could have made enough $ to buy a mugen oil pan and an ice cream cone

mine looked the same way is it is in the pic you're referring to. i bought mine almost two years ago, so, they may have in fact 'cleaned' up their welds on the baffles... ???

I like the looks of the Mugen much more. Spoon costs way more too.

for baffled oil pans, especially for mountain road driving in WVA. I managed to get my oil light pinging in my '95 GTI without trying on some road near Lost River state park. When I checked it (well, the several times I checked it, as it kept going off) the level was fine. Of course, that was one crazy road, reminds me of Cote' de Azour or whatever, the Euro rally course.

looking at the mugen pan... am i correct in what i'm seeing... the sides of the baffle is/are not welded to the side of the pan itself? it's quite obvoius that the spoon pan is welded to the side of the pan. any input george?

I have the Spoon pan - I think the baffles are brazed with brass. I think you wouldn't be able to weld it cause you might distort the thin side of the metal pan.

What is brazing you ask?

See: http://www.brazingbook.com/Section%2...20is%20brazing

The Spoon pan looks quite a bit cleaner in this pic, perhaps a new version?

This aluminum one is interesting too:
