Is my thermostat bad?
Ok so now that winter has hit my car seems to take forever to warm up, and when it does it isn't very warm. Also the needle almost never makes to the 1/2 way mark like it should, kinda stays in the 1/4 range of the whole guage. Anyhow I am starting to think that maybe my thermostat is done and keeps staying open all the time? Or does anyone else think somethink is wrong?
Anyhow any information would be nice
Thanks
Evan
P.S Its a 92 RS with 110 000 miles

I would say that your thermostat is bad. Mine went out a year ago. My car would never warm up and the heater never worked. It was kinda of a pain to change. Good luck. I think C-speed has a link for a thermostat change. You might look there.
Mine never makes it to the 1/2 way mark either.. kinda chills at 1/4-1/3. How can you tell if your car isn't warming up "fast enough?" I have a 97 GSR if this helps any.
I take my car up snowboarding all the time and when I would coast down the mountain, the car's temp would go all the way down to ice cold. The heater wouldn't work. That's when I knew the thermostat was staying open and not keeping the engine at the normal temp.
well anyway, if you wanna know how to change your thermostat ill tell you
you will need:
New thermostat with the o-ring
3/8 rachet
3/8 6" extension
10mm socket
12mm socket
pair of pliers
flat screw driver
bucket
No onto the install.
1.) jack you car up, (or put it up on the lift) take your rad cap off.
2.) take the 3/8 rachet and extension 12mm socket, and where the upper radiator hose meets the block, there is a little valve. undo the valve but dont take it out, just loosen, otherwise you will have fluid all over the place.
3.)now underneath your car, on the bottom of the radiator, there is a drain plug set the bucket under there
and twist that sucker out all the way.
4.) ONce all the fluid is gone, remove the lower radiator hose from the point where it meets the block. (usually underneath the ditributor cap somewhere) you might get a lil fluid leaking out of the block there.
5.) take your 12mm on that extension, and undo the housing where that hose met the block (kinda has a rounded shape to it.) this should remove with only 2 bolts.
6.) take off that piece, and wham-o, there is your thermostat.
7.)replace with your new part, and reverse the steps above.
8.)use new coolant and water. usually a 50/50 mix is prefered. and dont get prestone.
