How do I make painted plastic shiny?
I used some hobby car tint on the middle section of my CRX taillights, then I sprayed some clear coat over it. It still wasn't as shiny as I want it so I tried some polish, either I used too much or it didn't work... it looks all foggy (lots of white cloudy areas). Is there any way to get this stuff off or make it look shiny?
Thanks!

Thanks for the advice, but I was looking for a cheaper route... is there anything I can use to wash away the polish and not strip the clear coat/paint? Or if I use paint thinner/stripper will it eat away at the plastic too?
Thanks

Well if you want to go with the model paint route like you mentioned above......you had the right idea with the polish, try redoing it or paint thinner that you get at the model shop shouldn't eat away at the plastic if you don't use too much..
Two or three coats of the paint, sanding between each coat with that ultra fine sand paper (sorry don't know what grade that is) then do the same with the clear coat. don't know how well it will hold up outside though since its just model paint and not actual car paint.....

Alright thanks I will try your ideas. I think I'm gonna wait until I wash my car one more time, see if the polish is wearing off or if I can use soap and water to try and get it off. If not I guess I will wetsand and put more clear coat. After I was done applying clear coat, it just didn't seem shiny. I didn't sand in between any of the coats though and I didn't use that much clear. I'm gonna buy another can of that today so maybe that will help.

Oh yeah, I don't think I said this earlier either. I also painted the orange part of my taillights transparent candy red, made by Testors. It is even duller (more flat) than the center section. If I can't get it shiny (like the rest of the tails) then I will just use some thinner on it and forget about it.
Thanks again!

hey, don't use several thin coats and wait in between... think of it like this, you spray a light coat then it dries, it will haze naturally over some, you then spray another light coat, more hazing, another light coat what do you know more hazing! well the key to doing taillights and corner lights to get them to look glossy is to do ONE or TWO THICK coats, lay it on there, just be sure not to drip. If this does happen, you can use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and it will come off. Just be careful not to get it on the inside of the lens in anyway... so be sure to have your lights SEALED/CAULKED all the way shut before you use the alcohol. good luck.
cool thanks Husker.
Should I spray the clear coat in thick coats too?
Looks like I am going to be redoing the tails, hopefully they will turn out better next time.
Does anyone know how to make the polish look normal or shiny? Is there anything that takes it off? Should I buff the hell out of it? I tried buffing it but I think I put too much.

look... take the paint off with thinner.... use alot it wont mess up your lights.... just take them to a professional shop like http://wetworksgarage.com or http://www.smokedtaillights.com.... i think.... or just take it to a paint shop and tell them to spray it with clear mixed with black.... they will know what you are talking about..... and you didnt listen to me when i told you about the orange paint... i said to use candy paint....

spray it misty and then on your 2-3 coats down let it dry completely and spray heavy coat(heavy but ever, do dropping).
it previous (undry) coat hold the fresh paint in place.
take time and experience to learn..try it on a friend's car first..Jk

try the thick coats first and if it doesn't look glossy enough hit it with a thick layer of clearcoat, do it evenly, be sure to get the edges as they always seem to get neglected, TOO CLOSE and IT WILL DRIP
