Default Forged/Cast Rims

I am buying some 5zigen rims soon(Beckets I believe most of you will know them as) and I'm just a little confused about the two different types. The FN-O1Rc's are cast and the FN-O1R's are forged.

I was wondering what the difference between forged and cast rims are? Thanks in Advance.

Forged are what they are, forged out of a solid piece of aluminum/bronze/magnesium/ whatever

Cats wheels is when the metal is melted and poured into a cast.

Is one stronger than the other? Or lighter?

are forged wheels stamped or machined... if they are stamped i would assume they would be nearly unbreakable

just wondering, but how is a solid piece of aluminum formed? they had to have had the rim in some form before they forge it...would they mold it into a block first?

Usually, the wheel starts out as a saucer(sp?). The saucer is eated and then it is pressed by a machine into the desired shape using multiple thousands of pounds of pressure.

While forged wheels are "harder" they are also more "brittle". Once the shear stresses exceed the rims ability to contain it, a forged wheel will break where a steel rim will bend or a cast one will deform.

Bad potholes are the serious enemy of low profile tires on forged rims. That's a thousand dollars waiting to run down the drain right there.

forged wheels are lighter as opposed to cast wheels, only because the forged wheels require less amount of material to have the same strength as its cast couterpart, the cast wheel must be 'thicker' to have the same strength, therefore its a bit heavier.

Well would 45 series on a 16"rim be too low profile for street driving? I really don't feel like wasting a thousand dollars. If so I guess I'll just get the cast version.
Thanks for all the help guys.

i have 205/45/16 and IMO that is the perfect size for my si. i've had 17" wheels and the with the 35 series profile the tires kept getting bung all the time. go for the forged wheels, the light weight of them makes a huge difference

I went over some railroad tracks faster then I should've (I mean really fast) and I bent to of my Volks. They were bent not broken. I had them straighten'd out and I was good to go.

now that you guys talk about the problems with 17's, and my friend's rim recently being bent by an unknown factor...im considering 16's now. I figure 17's are nice and corner better, but 16s are probably better for street, and cost efficient. oh yeah, i fgure since my car wont ever look so good, i might as well concentrate on performance. can you feel the difference in cornering between a 16' rim and a 17' rim?

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll probably go with the forged ones in 16" with a 45 series tire. Hopefully I won't break any rims.

Volks are generally a cut above. The process of "ultralight" forging causes the brittleness. Some of the wheels that are forged are thought out and processed differently, thus the improved reliability.

Not all forged wheels are brittle, but some are. Customer feedback is a very good way to gauge a wheels reliability, and your comment speaks well for volks.
