What exactly does the brake booster do?

build up pressure so it's easier for you to apply enough pressure for the disc brake calipers. You won't see older cars with 4 wheel drums because not much pressure is needed to make them work. I don't remember exactly how much pressure it takes to get the calipers to squeeze the discs, but you need the added pressure. It runs off vacuum too.

 

Oops...better put that check valve back inline. Crap, no wonder it was harder to push on the brakes if i went from boost right to braking
