"Brake pads ate my wheels." or "Who needs black paint anyways?" (56 k beware)
Just washed my car, here is the state of my wheels:
This is with some imported Italian pads brought in buy a local OMP dealer. I like them for street and track, but the dust is killer. Oh well, I wanted a black set of wheels anyways.

My rims look the same. I use a presure washer and scrubed the hell out of them with a very soft brilo spung and took most of it off. Some of it is just imposible.
yikes, brillow pad on your rims. Thats going to scratch the hell out of the paint.
its important to get as much brake dust off as quick as possible. The glue used in brake pads, when mixed with water, becomes highly acidic and will eat at the paint and cause pitting.
P21S makes a great wheel cleaner, it gets most of the baked on dust off on the first pass. Another option, is using a paint cleaning compound and even a clay bar.
Since your rims are painted/clearcoated, it serves the same function as cleaning the body of the car.

We've been telloing you to wash your rims for the longest time.
Remember when you put the scoop in for your hood? half the posts were about the rims.

LOL!
I only clean the face of the spokes on my CW wheels, and around the lugs any more.
Doesn't show up as much on my GM rims.

this will sound crazy but use some oven cleaner. leave it on for like 30 seconds. then wax your wheels when your done. that is how I got the rusty nasty brake pad dust off mine.
my formula to turn a white wheel to flat black wheel
white rims + hawk hp+ pads + couple miles of hard driving = flat black rims
hp+ DUST LIKE MAD! its soooo annoying... but the braking is soooo much better. i sue the hp+ for both street and autocross. squeels like a **** at stops

quit your crying....i have racing hart's....white....and i ruined them with hawk blues daily driven in the rain.....
nothing like destroying (well others think i destroyed them) a set of 1500 rims
oh yeah....i think they add character to the car!!

You need to clean your wheels
Yes Sir, I also ruined two wheels with the Ferodo DS3000 pads. I left them on for a week after Lime Rock last November, and sure enough, after raining on and off for two days, I went out there to clean them and the dust became what can only be described as black concrete. Nothing has come even close to getting it off. Off-the-shelf brake dust cleaner (acid-solution) doesn't do a darn thing. That would be $618 worth of SSR Competitions ruined (well, not ruined but looking like crap). I'll try the Simple Green but I 'm afraid this won't put a dent in the stuff. What to do?
What "imported Italian pads" were you using?
sucks, but you should always clean your rims after running on race pads...otherwise you will get damaged rims. Personally I think it looks good!

Oh my that is some major brake pad dust
