Default Ground Control / Koni install questions

Need help with Ground Control/Koni Sports on my 1990 Civic Si

I first followed the bseries guide (http://www.bseries.net/html/garage/spring.php) which at least helped locate all the bolts and steps to remove everything, and nicely everything was basically the same even though the guide was written for newer generation Civic/Integras.

And I have instructions that came with the Konis, which are made assuming you are installing with stock/aftermarket springs with no coilover. I follow it okay, regarding the order in which all the washers and such go... But I'm still a little sketchy on some things. Then I have some photocopied "instructions" that Ground Control sent with their stuff for installing the GC's specifically with Konis. It even says at the top "for Civic 88-91" scribbled in hand writing. But the main thing I am confused with is that the bump stops in those instructions look just like the one in this pic from an Si install I found:

But mine are half that size and are not "stepped," they are just straight, about an inch long. The GC guide says to cut in half, which would leave these very short. So I can't imagine that is right.

The other thing I am a little confused about is the dust-shield sleeve thing. I've read a post where someone said you didn't even use it. The instructions from GC say to cut some of it off. My dust-shield sleeve from the stock strut/spring doesn't even slide over the stem of the new Koni shock though, like it did on the stock one, so regardless of cutting it, I don't see how that is going to help any if it won't even slide down from the top towards the shock body.

If anyone has any pictures of Ground Controls with Konis showing all the pieces, or a step-by-step install, it would help a lot!

-frustrated and have car in pieces with no way of taking it anywhere to have a "professional" show me what a dumbass I am

ok, first off it sounds like your bump stops might have all ready been cut down from the stock size. you can do 2 things here... 1. just keep your bumpstops that you have now (if they are ~ 1.5" long) or 2. you can get new bumpstops from a dealer and cut them in half.

as for the dust shields, you will need to trim them. since they are all metal, once you lower a car, they will bottom out. i removed mine completely, but i might put in some of that ribbed rubber shock cover material to protect the shock piston some.

as for the dust shield not going over the koni yellow shock piston, the koni shock piston is a bit wider in diameter than the stock one. get out a drill bit and enlarge the hole some...

hope this helps.

drill, okay, i can do that. rad. thanks man.

edit: oh yeah, does the long GC sleeve go in the back or front?

fyi, the 1.5" length was just a guess by me. i think the stock bumpstop when cut in half would be around 1.5"...

as for which spring goes where, i would put the long one in the front. i think i got the same length springs all around so i could swap the fronts for the rears if i want more rotation...

good luck.
