lines, or caliper/wheel cylinder are the only things that could be leaking at the tires

The mechanic is crazy! How would a leaking master cylinder get fluid to the drivers side rear tire?!?!

It sounds like there are two different leaks.

Wes.

If the fluid is making it to the tire... that must mean there is a lot of fluid coming out. I wouldn't drive that car.

Check out the calipers and the flex lines that go to them. If it's a drum rear, pull the drum and inspect the lines going in there.

If it's only leaking on one side, and the leak is occuring at the wheels... it's not gonna be your master cylinder.

Unless the mechanic meant the rear drum cylinder. But that wouldn't explain the front leak.
