Default cam seal question

Just wanted to know if you use or needed to use hondabond on cam seals? I just swapped out my cams and reused the one I had since I never had a leaking problem with them. Now I have a leak on the exhaust seal. I didn't notice any gasket around the seal when I removed them. I'll probably swapped them out just to make sure. If hondabond is needed, do you apply it on the upper half of the seal or around the entire seal?

thanks

None is needed...but a lot of people use a a slight amount around it to be safe. However, it is not required.

A bit OT, but related to the cam seal...

I know when I had my 95 Gs-R, the cam seals would weep. It was a common problem with DOHC engines back then. STR used to make a good living selling those pretty colored replacement cam seals.

I've noticed that on the recent DOHC engines, the seals don't seem to have this problem any more. Did Honda change something or go to a different seal? and if so, what year did they improve the seal?

Could you solve your problem with some updated seals?

I always use a thin coat on the outer edges to ensure no leakage. Its just a pain having an oil leak and having to pull the cams to fix it..

The cam seal on the other side has been replaced with a a revised part
that does not leak. Came on 96+ motors. Reusable too!

So you recommend to put some around the outer edge? Sounds good to me. I'll give that a try. Yeah, it's going to be a pain to pull the cams out just for the seals. I guess that what I get for not replacing them in the first place.

thanks again!
