Default OT: Fact or Fiction: Gas lines can freeze?

is it true that your cars gas lines can freeze on a bitter cold morning, causing startup difficulties? or is this just a myth?

Sorry for the dumb question

I think it's true, but as long as you keep at least a half a tank in your car, then it would have to be REALLY cold before you had any problems.

It has to be very cold like minus 30-40 Celcius. Most cars have moisture in the tank and fuel line system that can start the freezing process. Methyl hydrate in the tank (line antifreeze) can prevent this by binding to the H20 so it won't freeze.

I would not leave the gas tank less than half full.

why would it matter how much gas is in the gas tank? If I had 1/4 tank or a half tank, how is that gonna make a difference in it freezing or not?

BTW, my HONDA isnt the one that wouldnt start this morning...it was a WRX

Because I've had a gas line freeze with 1/4 - 1/8 a tank, never when mostly full.

farenheight = 32 + ( 9 * Celsius/5)

Cold (viscus) oil and a cold battery can also cause starting problems.

The more gasoline... the longer it takes to freez. In the tank at least... not sure about the line it self. Just throw a flare in the gas tank to warm things up... it works for me everytime, it worked reallty well on my GSR

so cold you would die.

haha, what are the odds? -40C = -40F
so 72 degrees below freezing on the Farenheit scale

Doh! Civic tank was at 1/8 last night. Fired right up thankfully!

Moisture in the line freezes.

My S-03's drive like they are flat spotted when my car is left out overnight when VERY cold in chicago (like today!!). Takes a minute or two before that stops. Luckily i don't leave the car out very often at all.
