Is $600 for an axle joint repair a fair price?
My car starts to vibrate after 60mph and becomes very noticeable after 70mph. But the shaking will be unbearable as I let off the gas at 70mph and the car feels like it's shaking from left to right. Also, at low speed, there is this loud ticking noise that comes from my driver side wheel that sounds as if my car is a train on track.
I took it to an Acura dealer and have them take a look at it. And they said that it's a CV joint or something from the driveshaft/axle that's not rotating flawlessly. The unit need to be replace and the total will be $600! Is this a fair price? I can't think of anyone else that can take care of such problem other than an Acura dealer.
And, does anyone know what causes such a problem? The recent two even relevant to it is 1) two days ago, I almost missed an exit and went up a curb a bit, I didn't bottome out or anything. 2) two hours before I notice the vibration, I was at a tire store performing wheel balancing and 4-wheel alignment.

cause is #1.
600, steep but you pay for it at the dealership, or buy the axle and have a little party with a few guys to repair it. considering its wintertime i'd go with the dealership.

P.S. both of my TL/ITR are at the dealership right now. TL undergoing a second warranty repair for a failed transmission

69.99 with the latest Hunter equipments at a Firestone branch. You can also pay $160 for a lifetime alignment. Basically, if you align once every 3 months, it's ok.

Hell, he replaces entire axles after he shatters them at Races... AND he helped me by replacing a faulty CV boot, (not the same as your CV joint problem.)
If that really is your trouble, did you notice anything before this? AND exactly what and how did your curbing happen? How bad did you hit the curb?
PM me just to satisfy my curiosity.
But, PM/IM rodney to answer your questions,,, he can help or could have helped you.

The curb is not the type like a sidewalk that you bang at. It's like a driveway type that I went up and down as it has a gentle slope. That's why I didn't think much of it.
BTW, is there anything like a "performance axle" that I can replace using this oppurtunity?>

hehe, I guess things are too late now as dealer already undergoing the repair. Do you think Chris can do it for cheaper?

......And actually, I get 'em for $59.99 plus core here at my local NAPA. They come with a 1 year warranty. Takes me 10 mins. to pull it, then I drive over, exchange it, go home, slap the new one in & I'm good.
Replacing joints & boots is a dirty-*** job, not to mention, more work than it's worth. I just replace the entire shaft.

you might want to look a little closer, retail on the complete axle assembly is over $600 each. just the AXLE shaft is $262
Just go to the Acura dealer and ask one of the techs if they do side work. More than likely, some will say yes and will cut you a big deal on the repair work. I am gettting a 30k on my R done for like $185. Normally at the acura dealer, that will cost about 300 or so. Honda will charge about 270 or so.
I can get you two brand new re-man axles for $220 and you'll get 60$ for your cores. Just IM me if you want em. Oh and if anyone cares these '94-01 DOHC VTEC Teg axles hold up just fine to abuse. I can attest to that
$600 dollars! good god! It's not like they have to drop the tranny or anything! I'm sure someone here at honda-tech could do it for you for real cheap. Just buy a rebuilt cv joint.
