OT: Test drove a S2000 today...my thoughts
i went to my local honda dealership (mainly b/c I was really bored today) and found a '00 S2000 with 62k on the odometer and they are asking 22,500. My mom knew the sales guy and he let me take it for a spin by myself. I dropped top so I didnt have to look at the cheap plastic rear window and started the car. First off my ITR clutch feeling like mush compared to the s2000. i drove normal until the car had warmed up a bit. After the temp rose and i caught a red light i slowly started off and floored it. It wasnt breath taking and was very comarable to my ITR. But when I hit 2nd the *** end wiggled, LSD caught up and it chirped the tires. It was fast but not what i was expecting. Anyways to make a long story short my conclusion on S2000s is that if you took a ITR, converted it to RWD and chopped the top you would have a s2000. Just my .02 (im bored)

I dont understand how u can compare a R to a S2000?? they are totally 2 different type of cars but for anyone out there that is wondering the R in the USA is the fastest car HONDA & ACURA made besides the NSX!

dont get me wrong with an equal driver a s2000 would walk my *** all over the track but still...i just loved the wind in my hair and the open road. I might sell the R i dont know...I gotta see how much it would cost to convert that plastic rear window to glass....or just buy a '01

I enjoyed my test drive last yr while my R in for 15k main. but to me the S2K felt too civilized because its more a grow up car. Always curious out of all the Rs in Honda lineup, why they never approach the S2K?
I bought a 2001 S2000 and kept it for 14 months; put 12,000 miles on it before trading it for an Odyssey for my wife (yes,
you heard that right) after our second son was born. I tracked the car 3-4 times. Sure I miss the car, it's handling was superb and it was my first soft top. The R is a very worthy replacement. I was surprised that the R's speed at the end of the back straight at VIR is only 5-6 mph slower than the S2000. The R's capabilities have have made life w/o S2000 very tolerable. S2000 is a "9", Type R is an "8".

the only thing you can compare between the R and the S2K is the power. And the S2K has more power than the R. It might not be a huge amount, but it is definitely faster stock for stock. The S2K handles like its on rails and the suspension/seats are very stiff. Steering is precise and 1st through 3rd gear pull very nicely and engine sound is awesome when you have a CAI installed. Would I buy one over the R? Probably not, but not because I dont like it. Its just not for me. I had a two seater before, and would love to have one again, but Id choose the R over it. The only thing the S2K lacks is low end torque, much like most other hondas out there. Im sure the car is amazing when supercharged or turboed.
Yes 02 was the first year for the glass rear window, and it makes a huge difference. You can actually see out of it! The defroster helps for those of us who have to drive it year round. And even though it was already addressed, the R is NOT faster than the s2000.
i think both s2k's and type r's are kind of overated in some ways....they are both quick yes but they are mostly track cars...i dont have a problem with it i like both cars and i wish i owned one of each...they are cars for the turns not cars for a straight line...so i dont think flooring it on a stock s2k is anyway breathtaking imo....my thoughts....the fastest car ive ever floored it in was a modified 2002 mustang gt...now to me that was breathtaking...mucho torque and mucho hp...since they are both totally diff cars i dont think you can compares these...well either way i want to drive an s2k
Drove my friends s2000 and the suspension is pretty stiff. Vtec kicks in pretty hard. To bad all the aftermarket parts are jacked up in price.

Correct me if I am wrong - but from what I have read - I was always under the impression that the early s2k's handling was slightly flawed - or maybe i should say a lot less forgiving than the R's.
The "handling flaw" was way over played. No such flaw existed in my opinion. Ham fisted steering or throttle inputs at the wrong time sent many S2000s to the repair shop. Driver error! Yes, just like any track tuned rwd performance car it is less forgiving than an ITR.
I am having trouble on how you determined it is so close from such a brief drive. I would say go to a track before making comments as cutting the roof and you have a S2000. Did you take it on multiple curves? Did you nail on the brakes? I mean common, just cause you floored it in a straight line you think it is the same? lol Great review.

I test drove the s2k also. I got on it mad, had the rear end all over the road. Pretty fun. I would not get rid of an R for one though. I would just get both.
OT: 98cwitr: I just bought a 98 ITR tonight number 370.
Your number is the closest I've seen to mine since I've been looking at it. I know, I'm a dork... but I finally got a Type R.

the s2000 is a limit car not mass produce. own one before it's too late.
the s2000 is built in the same place as the nsx.
i was so impress with the looks and the motor. i need to own one.
