ok...my question is...i know what the differences between them are...but can the smog people tell? cuzza the VIN on the engine or whatever...and would it make that much of a dfference swapping into a 96 DX hatch. and if i intended on going turbo...should i just forget both and go for the GSR motor? which is better for turbo?
JDM Type R hands down. Not unless you can find a USDM ITR for a really great price.
You can get a BAR sticker for your JDM ITR as long as you hook up the USDM exhaust manifold, along with a USDM ITR ECU, and all the proper smog equipment.
As far as GSR vs ITR I would definitely go with the ITR. The better valvetrain/head, higher compression pistons, LSD, and ITR tranny cannot be added to a GSR for the $1500 that they charge between the GSR and ITR.
Turbo? I have talked to a few people that are running minimal boost on their ITR's. They seem to be very pleased with the setup.

thanks...i hear a lot of people say that....but what is the nessesary smog equiptment?? and im probably going to change the internals on the motor anyways...so do you think boost is a good idea?

The best way to check and see if you have all the proper smog equipment is to either buy a Helms or to visit the library and photocopy the smog diagrams from an ITR. Overall, it sounds like a lot of items, but once you have the sticker, the rest is simple. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE BAR STICKER BEFORE YOU START MESSING WITH THE ENGINE. After the engine becomes legal to be inside the chasis, then all you have to worry about every two years is passing the emissions part and minor visual.
Good luck. In the end I would still go with the JDM ITR.

Whatever is cheapest. The JDM ITR motors are a little cheaper then their US counter parts. I had a JDM ITR motor. Toda B's took care of that motor now I have a US ITR motor. I actually feel like the US motor is stronger (In stock trim anyway).
Its geting boosted so its irrelevant.

forgive me if that doesn't sound believable.
timeslip, please. i haven't seen EGs run close to that time with the same engine, and your chassis is far heavier. unless you are one of those "i've got a 70hp header" people.

MIKE
for ***** and Giggles, I'd like to see that time slip also.. ****, maybe if i get an Arospeed Front-mount intake (wannabe FMIC), OBX header and Pacesetter exhaust I can have a high 13sec SI also..
there wont be a VIN plate on the JDM engine, It may be stand on the long block, but other than that you may never have one. It will be more of a hassle to put a JDM engine over a USDM in your car, but I think that JDM is better, little tougher parts. AS for turbo??? to turbo a type r your going to have to put a lot of cash in it. First you need to lower the compression, new pistons, rods, create more clearance in the head. stock compression is like 11:1 for JDM. is it a turboable engine? yes it is, but not without modification. Is a GSR more turbo capable stock? yes very much so.

You do not need to lower the compression on a ITR motor. A JDM ITR motor may be slightly higher compression wise....so put a thicker headgasket on and tune the bitch.
high compression turbo motors are just as good and in some cases better then low compression motors, it just depends on what your goals are.
High compression motors just have a smaller margin for error, so don't skimp on the tuning. Get a Hondata (Or equivalent) and tune the car (Or take it to someone who can tune your car) good.

i have timeslips for my pass, honestly
An EM Si (I/H/E) with 145 whp (maybe) will not run 13.90's
Let me guess slicks, gutted, tail wind , late fall at night with the temp in the 50's and the baro at 31+.......maybe with those conditions...

Remember the 1/8 and the 1/4 mile are completely different.
