I was wondering if obd2 alternators work on obd0 cars...the plugs go in...but is the wiring the same?

Yes, but you will have to find an alternator plug from the 96 civic to make it work.
the one you have uses a round plug while the 96 uses a rectangular plug.
you will also have to rewire the plug.
(did I say plug enough times?)

 

so which is it? Do I have to rewire or not? Is it straight plug and play?

just try it and see what happens, i have an obd1 al in my crx, no totally sure it will work but just try it out.
