Helm Service Manual Rocks! How about the ETM? Worth the money?
Helm makes the Honda factory service manual. It's a little pricey, but it's the best. However, the wiring diagrams leave something to be desired; hence, the need for an ETM, if you have electrical problems.
The factory Service Manual is $69.00. No problem, but how about the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual? It's another $48.00.
This is what Helm says:
1996-2000 Civic Electrical Troubleshooting Manual
Written by Honda, this book has the most in-depth wiring diagrams available. Information on how to troubleshoot electrical problems, this manual includes circuit schematics, power distribution schematics, ground distribution schematics and component locations to accurately repair electrical problems. ETMS are model and model year specific, and their schematics are far more detailed than the wiring diagrams in the Service Manual. For best repair results, use this manual in conjunction with the Service Manual.
Personally, I think the ETM would be worth it's weight in gold, but was curious if anyone has actually seen/used one. Looks like you really need both manuals to cover all the bases. Owning the Service Manual alone is only gonna get you half-way 'home' in many cases.

I drive a 2000 CiViC and this is 2003. I was afraid if I waited too much longer, they might be out of stock, so...
The ETM was priceless when I was doing my 98 DX to 00 Si swap. It gives detailed pinout diagrams for every coupler on the car. Well worth the money if you are planning on doing a swap.
i was wiring up ex power doors into my roomates hatch and the guy at the service desk made me a bunch of copys of all the wiring and such i believe it was the book your talkin about and it was great..

When I had my old Camry, I did ALOT of wiring-related stuff (custom wiring, adding stuff, repairs, etc.). I got a factory electrical manual off eBay and it was a HUGE help for when I retrofitted OEM cruise control, repairing the heater fan blower resistors, etc.
The ETM is worth every penny. I didn't know it existed untill I started working for a Honda Dealership about 3 years ago. Everything like the pins and style plugs is in that book. A few of us local have used it to make up climate controls from one car to another, or a using GSR clusters to another make, converting OBD-2 to OBD-O and etc, etc.
I taught about scamming every page on the ETM and service manuals and putting on a CD. Whats everyone taughts on this. A few locals with different car makes have done this to help out among others. Such as the Nissan and Toyota camp.
Let me know what everyone thinks since I have access to Honda/Acura dealerships libarary.

back from the dead......
i just let someone BORROW our shops CRX ETM yesterday, and i need it tonight.
DAMN IT!!!!!
from when i bought the car untill now....
SONY aftermarket tape deck.... partially clipped harness
bought a 00 integra type R cd player..... same style harness
plugged cd player in clipped harness.... power on, no sound
bought new harness from work... has 16 wires stock had 12 (before clipped)
wired the 12 of the stock wiring into the 12 of the new harness (same colors and positions)(4 wires left over)
cd player turns on, and i got sound.... but its only from the tweeters of the speakers, and not the cone.
so, now i'm trying to figure out if one of each of these 4 wires gets spliced in somewhere to the 4 speakers.
WHAT A ******* PAIN!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah - they look good on paper - too bad they aren't always accurate. Stick with Helms, period. And if you think the electrical diagrams are the only thing that contain inaccuracies, you'd be wrong.

Could have email you the 96-98 or 96-00 factory manuals on pdf. I know there are several place online you can get them too. I just print the sheets I need so I can get the pages all dirty while I am working then throw them away.
Check out this link. Why is there a manual for 96-00 and another that's seemingly identical for 96-99?

One says "shop manual" and one says "service manual" - are they different?

Just get the 96-00 manual that costs about $70. Shop manual, service manual - same thing.
Once upon a time though, before the 2000 Civics were made, they had to provide us guys that had 99 Civics with service info. I have the 96-99 version but I know the info applies to 00 as well.
