So I happen to have a D16Y8 laying around and decided what the hell lets build a kick *** SOHC cause no one seems to do them. Idea sounds good in theory so we will see how it goes.

Basically by searching around here I have found some good options for lower compression pistons (going to turbo it) and rods and some various headwork but my question here is is there a better crank I should track down? Need some suggestions on crank options and any other ideas or problem area's that people have not seen addressed in previous postings around here.

By the way engine is going in a 97 EX Coupe

 

I'd be intrested to know as well if anyone has built a nice SOHC motor. I'm doing the exact same thing to drop into a 92 Dx.

That crank is pretty much it as far as stock replacement crancks go but for seriouse horsepower it should knife edged at least.

 

Weight weight weight. that is what is going to help that SOHC motor. I reccomend aluminum Flywheel, no AC, No Power steering and a **** load of aluminum piping.

 

try asking a pro like bisi. he for one should know.

well if your going with boost and that much of it of course youll need pistons rods maybe even want to sleeve it, bigger injectors, hondata and some good tuning..

exactly I planned on all of that my question here was mainly about the crank.

but since we are on the subject I have already done some research but a few suggestions on piston selection never hurts.

 

honestly id leave the crank alone..honda cranks are pretty damn well maid..for the piston.rod selction id go with something like the JE pistons and Eagle Rods..

I looked at JE and they seemed like they might be a tad more race than I need I attempted to look at Arias but their website is currently down any others I should look into?

Also I haven't looked into rods much but eagle is my first choice should it be my only?

 

arias pistons are decent..my friend ran those in his supercharged SOHC w/ 10 LBS and he hasnt run into any problems so far..

I have already read that entire thread and searched for some piston and rod combo posts and got some information but wanted a little more in depth. Unlike most I actually did some homework before I posted.

8 to 10lbs of boost isn't that much i would suggest really looking into tunning ****. like the A/F and **** get bigger injectors and maybe hondata or at least a apexi safc or vafc. there is a guy in the FI sectioin that has a ls motor boostn 20lbs on a basiclly stock internally motor. go to the FI forum and use the search function it fuckn does alot

 

8-10lbs of boost is what your motor can handle stock wise...for 12lbs that might be pushing it a little...theres some guy on here selling B18b rods and Toyota Supra pistons for around 500...that should be good enough for 12lbs...also your gonna want a good fuel mangement...maybe a Hondata or the AEM

if one were to buy turbopandas piston/rod setup (i wont but lets pretend) and switched the rods to crower (not the econo rods either) wouldnt it be able to withstand like 400hp? ** by saying that i mean the motor built other than those, fuel, timing, tuned. etcc... the reason i ask is because i see supras putting down 900hp on stock blocks and if you turn that into a per cylinder rating would it mean that the pistons could hold over 400 horse on a 4cyl easy... i know the supras have ultimate sleeves and blocks,,, but ALL I AM ASKING ABOUT is the piston.... any guesses on how it would hold the power? i would never do this myself, but its a good question so someone answer! thanks

 

I have 250 whp on stock internals pushin 12 psi daily. its all about tuning. The AEM ECU is my friend.

 

I've heard somthing about an auto-tune with AEMEMS. Seems like a good idea but I dunno if it was just rumors.

 

I have a D16Z6 and I bought supra pistons and b16a rods. I am going to try and boost to 1.2 bar. I just need to buy some new axles, a fuel pump, and a few other little things then I will get it running.

I'd be worried about that. From what I've been reading the stock d-series rods are only good up til about 250hp. Also, 250whp @12psi on a d-series seems VERY high...
