Default Cold day, car overheating, but heater still hot??

WTF??
Really cold outside last night. Driving to work (20 minute highway drive).
Car warmed up really quick. Turned heat on - works great. Then the needle kept climbing!!
Now, for the last while, when the heat was turned on, the car would run a little on the cold side, but is now overheating...WTF!!
Also, no puddles under the car, oil appears fine, coolant may be a little low, and heat works great...
Opinions, hearsay, and actual knowledge appreciated.
Thanks guys/girls.

I would say check your thermastat and do a flush and see how that works for you.

Will be the first thing I replace, but only because it is cheap.
If thermo goes bad, flow is blocked off, heater won't work. Mine works great. *shrug*

How low is your coolant? While your car is cold, open up the radiator and check if you have coolant in there. It could be possible that there could be coolant in the reservoir, and empty in the radiator. If your temp gauge climbs that fast, i wouldn't drive it unless you make sure your cooling system works properly first. Good luck!

Yes, the level of coolant is a little low, will be topped up ASAP.
I will repeat that the heater is still blowing hot, possibly a little hotter than normal. This would not happen if the coolant level were low enough to cause overheating.
With the thremostat, same deal, no coolant flow, no heat. The heater picks up after the thermostat.
Definitely appreciate the input guys, keep em coming...

you did replace the thermostat? did it just start to do this recently? the only reason why coolant wouldnt flow is if A. the water pump has about gone out or B. the thermostat is bad. replace those both make sure the coolant lines are not pluggged. From there I dont know what to tell you.

Good Luck

I had this same problem for awhile, I changed the thermostat and 2 weeks later I got trashed with the same Needle on the H. I took the radiator cap off and took it for a spin and it got half way on the temp, so I got back home and burped the radiator untill it was completely full with water and coolant, it cured my heating problems.. Saddly enough.
