1990 Accord-Cannot Remove Key from Ignition
Periodically, I cannot remove the key from the ignition. My wife and I have seperate keys, same problem. Are the keys too warn. Suggestions?
Will the car still turn off? I have a '93 accord and I had the same problem. The key got stuck and the car wouldnt turn off. The ignition is probably worn out, you need a new one, which means you now have seperate keys for door and ignition.
Yes, It is an automatic. The Brake/shift sensor (the release for the shifter when the brake is applied) is sporatic . It fails when cold.
It could be the Shifter lock mechanism out of alignment. If it's not in the right spot for Park, you can't take the key out. Do you have a manual for your car? Try forcing the shifter back and forth while trying to get the key out.
It is definately the shift lock mechanism cause mine does the same thing. Just throw it in park hard or sometimes if you let off the brake it sometime will like make a "click" noise and it will show on the dash that it is in park, then the key will come out.

Okay, thanks, but what needs to be done to repair it? I am skilled. Or, is it cost prohibitive?
Hey RS,
Its the shifter as everyone said. I came across this as well when I had changed the stock shifter with a more stylish aftermarket one. Try to take off the shifter **** and see if anything is warn.
When you take off the ****, the shift rod has a lever coming out of a the cylinder. Try to shift the car by pushing the lever in. You should be able to shift. Shift it back to park and turn off the car. If you can take out the key then its the ****. You can find those at any junkyard.
You should be all set. Let me know if you got questions
