Default dunno if this is tech or alright for here. tranny question and a torque question.

I have a J1 tranny sitting in my garage. I havent touched it in 6 months. Somehow it built rust up on the axle insertion location. only one side. So I have rust in my tranny now. Is this REALLY bad? or just somewhat bad?

Should i just carefully wire brush it off? Or jus screw it and use it anyway as is. I have magnetic tranny plug so im wondering if rust isnt a huge issue. I have another tranny in good shape minus a 5th gear though S1.I rather use the J1 as its rebuilt but when it sat around got the rust. What should i do?

No digicam so I cant show how much. but its only on the part where the non teethed part of the axle sits closest to the axle seal. Kinda has spiral groove on it.

Rust that bad?

Also another quicky. My torque wrench only goes to 110NM. The fly wheel bolts need 120NM torque. U think its ok to jus put it to 110NM and then a little more with a normal wrench?

Thanx for any opinions.

i never use airtools when building a motor or working with a clutch and flywheel. my method of tightening flywheels is to put all 8 bolts in finger tight to the crank, and then bolt a piece of metal from the flywheel to the side of the block, as in one of the holes that the trans bellhousing bolts to. then torque the bolts down in steps, until reaching the proper tension.

rust on the mainshaft wont matter it wont go in your trani there is a seal.

plus your trani has magnets to pick up particles anyway.
