my cousin just got a Si too. so he bought a cai and we installed it ...he said that after a while he felt alot less torque at low rpms and in my car he dosent feel that so I said maybe its the air duct so I cut it and he said it felt much much better. Does this actually help or is it in the mind?
Oh I jacked this pic...sorry

Yes, it will help...alot. Cut the hole from the back with the bumper of and hot glue or epoxy a piece of 98 cent gutter guard to keep large bugs and debris out.

thanks for using my car TheHater! im flattered!
anyway, it probably helps a little bit, but i don't think he would actually be able to feel a difference.

I'd say its a placebo effect. Are those holes completly sealed on EK's? Even if they are your still sucking in air from the engine compartment/behind the splash guard.

I made a post the other day about making some kind of pull down under fender scoop.
I was thinking about cutting my bumper in the same area, but then I was wondering about rain hitting my filter and moisture going up into the intake manifold.
If you cut it, let me know how it goes - I might end up doing it.

I did the cold air induction just like my friend chris did here. I cut out the entire black plastic in the bumper with a utility knife and used the trimmed gutter flange the same way. I also got the same dryer ducting but I hooked it up to the stock Si air box with a spoon filter. It seems to work pretty well and you can hear the air being pulled in from the front when it's just sitting there idling. I think it works well.

the front bumper would have to be submerged past the duct where it pulls it in to suck it all the way up to the engine. And if you're in that much water you're pretty screwed anyway, you're lucky if you're engine is even running from being soaked. For just rain I wouldn't worry about it. A LOT of water has to make it all the way thru the airbox and filter and then into the TB to hydrolock. Repeat, a LOT of water. Some moisture isn't going to hurt the engine. You have to suck up pretty much all water and no air to hydrolock. Chris has had this setup for a while with no problems and I have been running a GSR AEM CAI on my coupe with a B18C1 and there are no fender well linings or splashguards and I have been fine. I've been flying on the highway in absolute downpours and haven't had a problem. If I go thru a big puddle I just lift off the gas. Going thru puddles isn't a problem if you just cruise, it's when you're at WOT and you hit a big puddle. You really have to try to hydrolock your motor.
With this setup with a stock airbox it's pretty much a non issue.

So if its pouring ran and water gets on the filter its not going to suck any into the engine? So moisture going into engine doesnt matter? The oil on the filter should help but I just want to be sure.
Yeah, I did something similar to this on my EG but left the horizontal grill part, but I dont currentley have a cai so its kinda usless but it is an easy mod that Im 100% sure gives alittle extra power.

And yes it does help. Try taking a blowdryer and just blow air around the hole..not even directly at the hole..and this is only air coming from a hairdryer.
Apexi Japan has a new kit that is similar to this.

well, for you guys that think its hard to hydrolock an engine..... its not. but i do think the cutout idea is cool. id paint that grill mesh flat black, though. heres my gsr rod after a little trip through an unexpected lake

hmm, im thinking of using my stock airbox, take out the resonator and run similar tubing right from the front of the bumper up the the filter, and also get a KnN high flow flat filter, sweet idea man
Does anyone think my idea would work?

How bout when it snows, and your following a car and its kicking up some snow, well really mist. How bad is that ? I was thinking of doing it on my crx but that is the main reason I did not.
I don't know about rain and snow, my car is not a daily driver. Maybe you could keep a roll of duct tape in the car and if it rains or snows you could "nascar" the hole (cover it with duct tape).
