Default '91 Civic - Maintenance Problems, need help

yesterday the following was done by a friend:
* valve adjustment
* Bosch platinum plugs (not the +4)
* fuel filter
* distributor cap & rotor
* timing to 16 degrees
* air filter

when we were finished, the idle noticeably dropped. it's become so low that the entire car shakes. why did the idle fall? also, the car seems to lag more in 1st gear, so should we creep up the timing?

we called a dealer for the valve clearances, but we suspect they gave us the wrong ones, because the were still very noisy (i forgot what the figures they gave us already). does anyone know what they are?

thanks in advance,
Rich

change the plugs back to your old ones or non-platinum NGKs....
