type of wax or polish
HI, I was wondering if any one knows what type of wax would be good to use?? theres so much out there and i wanna know what really works and stuff..any help would be great. thanks
Offer more infor. What do you like? Quick and Easy? One Step or "more than one step?" Light Refelction or Weather Protection? Thin Shine or Thick Shine? Or are you on the quest for the ultimate shine?
I don't really care if it is quick and easy or whatever...but it has to look good. I want something that will not need to be reapplied every week or whatever. I just need something to keep my car shiney..
I recommend Zaino. You can order it and read about it at:
http://www.zainobros.com/
I like it because it's optically clear, with no image distortion, like some of the waxes. It offers shine that is thin, reflective, instead of thick layer. Most of all, it's synthetic so it last long.
Down side? Expensive, takes a lot of your time, and it's not thick (some people like it that way). In Zaino, thin is better.
I don't follow all their instructions, but instead mod it to fit me.
I'll start with a good paint surface cleaner before you layer on the Zaino.
Got more Qs? Post it and I'll reply.

Hey, which bottles of that zaino stuff did you buy? did you get the z-1 and z-5 stuff?? I know the z-2 stuff is what i'm supposed to use for my paint type..but what about that other stuff?
I got Z1 and Z2 only. Z5 is only if you got scratch marks. Since I didn't have any, that's all I need. I look at it this way, Z1 is the "glue" that hold the polish (Z2) together. Most of the time, I just touch it up with Z6, which is like a quick detailer.
I first used a Mothers pre-wax cleaner to clean the crap. Yes, I should have clay, but was not comfortable with it at that time. Been on Zaino since.
The last time I did my car was like 4 months ago, where I slap on 1 coat of Z1 and 3 coats of Z2 with Z6 in between each coat. Every month or so I wash my car and touch it up with Z6 and it looks like the day I "wax" it.
Maybe sometime in the summer, I clay the car to start over.

Don't waste your money on a GREAT Marketing Scheme.

A whopping $22 for a bottle.
I don't know the story between Finish First, and Liquid Glass, but the bottles look almost exactly a like. Liquid Glass been around a long time, so I'll comment on that. Never used Finish First.
LG would be my first choice on "older" cars. I don't mean cars that are not painted with clear coat, but I just mean cars that are a few years old. Why do I say that? Because LG have cleaners that clean the surface. I would use it if you paint surface is not "perfect" or it get's "dirty" fast.
In thoery, each time a wax clean the surface, it actually removes a layer of paint (clear coat).
The downside of products like Zaino is that there is no cleaner. So are you layer it, you maybe covering up the crap that is on the surface. Soon, you'll have build ups, and need some cleaning.
So then what's the difference if you still got to clean anyways? If not now, then later?
That's the personal choice, I rather do a major cleaning of my paint surface once a year, then each time I wax.

So you mean you clay the whole car? You just rub that stuff every where or something?
Do the clear wrap test. A must before you clay to see if surface really need it. Clay is expensive and takes a lot of time. So that's why I say "must."
Put a small piece of clear wrap between your fingers and the clean and wash paint surface. Run your fingers through. Up and down, left to right. Do you feel bumps? Are some areas more than others. If so, you need clay.
Why do you need the clear wrap? Does it stick to bumps and stuff when you go over them?
How much clay is expected to be used if I wanted to do the whole car?

What about Meguiar's? I think they're good. They're inexpensive and they work well. Try them first before you waste so much money for the same result. I heard alot of good things about meguiar's and a lot shop use this brand. So i would try them. Just my two cents.

Clay is like $15-20 depending on brand. One will last more than one car. Most guys only use a piece and save the rest. It's better to save clean clay than dirtty clay. Read all the clay instructions before use.
So what do you recommend as a "good" clay to use? There aren't many places that sell that kind of stuff around here, so I have no idea whats available. So any info would help
I only know of two brand of clay. I'm sure there are others.
1. Zaino Z18 (mail order only)
http://www.zainobros.com/files/info.htm#anchor158090
2. Mother's brand. You can find it at PepBoys. That's the only place I've seen it.
I don't want to make a big deal, but just want to offer this. Be careful when using clay, and read all the instructions. And most of all, use plenty lube, when you rub the clay bar on the surface. If you run out of lube, use car wash soap. Don't not be skimppy on that. Rotate the clay, so you are not rubbing crap back on the paint surface. Also, if you drop it on the ground, DO NOT use it again. Clay will pick up dirt. Some guys (not careful) end up scratching their surface. Try it on the small spots until you feel comfortable.

Interesting, I've never used clay before. I think I'll give it a try. What kind of lube are you supposed to use?? Car wash soap? or is there some stuff that comes with the clay?
