OT: Bought an '03 GTI 1.8T...
After finalizing things with the TL, I was just waiting for Honda finance to receive the check and for them to reflect the zero balance on my wifes credit. Since anything Japanese (especially H/A products) in the NYC area is at far greater risk of theft and/or vandalism (they stole my TL HID's! TWICE!)
I figured an affordable, yet fun German car would be the way to go. I was really tempted to get a Mazdaspeed Protege, but the dealer was marking up the car way too much and it simply didnt make financial sense to end up paying way over $20k for a Protege. I also looked at WRX's, but I've heard of some modded rex's being stolen in this area so that scared me off.
So I got a stripped 1.8T GTI. no roof, no leather, no premium sound, no heated seats or climatronic. The only thing I got were the 17's. Flash Red/Black cloth, I kinda like the car better since it's got no options, it sorta reminds me of an R. Plus I got a great deal on it since 95% of GTI buyers stay away from stripped cars and at the very least usually get a sunroof/leather. My car was an oddball that was sitting there collecting dust, so I used that to my fullest advantage. In other words I STOLE IT FROM THE VW DEALER
I got a GTI for a Golf GL price!
It's a daily, so no major mods are planned. Just an Eibach pro-kit to buffer the Chevy Tahoe-like wheelwell gap and a K&N panel drop-in to free up a few ponies and mpg. Cheers

Mazda 6 optioned the way I wanted it would have been about $26K. So it wasn't worth it since the dealer wouldn't budge on the 6's price either. I got the car for about $17K. Uncleben, I'll see if davidnyc ccan help get some pics up. I finally got a nice dig camera but I'm still an E-tard
traitor!
Chip that biotch! Those 5 valve 1.8T's make mondo power - but you might have to invest in an LSD.

If I come across and extra $1500 six months from now then a Quaiffe and chip would definetly make my morning commute lots more fun
But for now a K&N and some Eibachs will have to do.

Did you at least get to test drive the 337? It looks very sharp in person especially with those bling BBS rims.
How much do they go for anyway?

i ran a 15.0 in my buddys gti, only mod was a forged DV. not bad for a pretty much stock car w/ 2 12's in the back....i was very surprised.
edit: wait it did have a k&n drop in filter

I had talked to a GTI 1.8T owner last summer at racewaypark and he said all ya have to do is an ECU and a exhaust and you will be in the low low 14s. I saw the guy run and he was hitting 14.1-14.3, now the question is will the simple mods allow that car to go that fast? If so then Your Christmas shopping is not done yet

chip it, you'll be much happyer camper afterwards. i currently own a 1.8t Jetta w/ APR chip, and although it's fun (i guess...) , i cant say that i have an R in the garage... so the jetta is out the door and an R is probably going to replace it.
btw. dont waste your time with a K&N, especially just a panel filter. your only going to make your car marginally louder, and in stop and go your going to lose power. if you must have an air filter get one of the CAI's on the market. you'll even get to hear the DV purge after that!
http://www.vwvortex.com hit up the 1.8t forum. best place on the internet for VW message board love. although i do prefer HT.
hey and what did you think about the mazdaspeed? it's the only car still on my list that might bump the R from the garage. when i test drove one (first MSP in utah. i've had my money down for a long time and my dealership seems very very cool) with a friend of mine who owns an R, we both came away shocked. just wondered what your impressions of the car were, since you still do own your R.
An ITR with I/H/E will run low 14s.
... but what I was saying it to Boost the VW up to just have more fun with.
Not directed towards competition in anyway
BTW. theres been a few of the Airzona guys who have dynoed 210whp+ with chip/intake/3' turbo back exhaust. i think the fastest 1.8t i've heard of with just boltons (no nos, stock turbo) was 13.6x on slicks sometime late in the season somewhere on the east coast. not too shabby, but most chip/intake/exhaust 1.8t's are somewhere in the mid 14's.
but who gives a ****. it's a straight line. as soon as you turn the wheel in any direction the car falls right on it's face. i've rallied the **** out of my friends VR6 with a Bilisten Race setup for shocks/springs, stock front sway bar (19mm iirc) and 25mm rear sway + Quaiffe and it still handled like a turd.
i dont know if you've seen pictures, but the stock KKK k03 turbo is TINY. it makes the T25 seem like a monster. if you guys particularly care i can dig up a picture of a k03 layed next to a GT25. the k03 looks like a thimble.

you can't go wrong for 17k, that's a price of a new civic.
with so many toys, leave the gti close to stock.
believe it or not, but lots of vw's/audi's are stolen in the tri-state area also.
