Default headlight power loss

my friend has a 91 prelude 4ws. the motor was a 2.1 then he and his brother did a b20 motor swap before i ever met them so i dont know that everything was hooked up right but it all looks good under the hood. now the question is that all of the lights on the car ie, dash clock headlights, dim when he hits the gas but only when the car is in gear. we have already replaced the alternator thinking that might be the problem but it didnt solve it. we are kinda lost. if anybody has any thoughts please give some input.

Possibly the battery itself may need to be changed. Are the belts on tight enough?

battery is pretty new too i think. they never have a problem with it dying on them. and the batt is never dead when they try to start. i will check the belts here in like 5 minutes

Are you sure that the alternator is the correct one for that engine? My thought is that the alt is not powerful enough so when you hit the gas power is being taken away from the accessories therefore making the lights dim. Also you may want to check your ground. Where the battery grounds to the frame take it off clean it up sand it down so that you have a good ground.
