Default Race Gas??? Worth it??

I put some race gas in last night, made final mixture about 97 octane, the H22 seemed to like it. Maybe I just think its faster but I was hanging right next to my buddy who usually has a nice slow steedy pull on me. I dunno it could just be my car had a good night. Anyone else have experience with gains on stock compression with just a ported head and i/h/e? I thought race gas was just a safety thing. I put it in for the hell of it and kinda liked it. Who knows? The only other thing I did was replace my o2 sensor, I guess that couda been burnt out and made it run shitty?

O2's can go pretty bad.. I highly doubt race gas helped you, unless your jacked your timing way up.. usually, you try to run the lowest octane you can w/ out detonation.

i never nkew it was good to run low octane. i always thought that higher octane gave me more power. i heard when some people switch from low octane to high octane, their cars run better.

where did you ever hear lower octaine was better? if you want less detonation, run colder spark plugs, not crappier gas. the higher octane gas can most definately be an improvement in performance. the best mixture when using 110 octane fuel, even on a stock motor, would be one gallon 110 and the rest 93 (or the highest you can get that is over 90). there is a person that i know who has been mixing this stuff in his car for a couple years trying to find the right combination. the 110 octane is only good running it straight when you are at 14:1 compression. he tried the full tank of 110 and didn't notice a difference. when he mixed the 1 gallon in with the 93, he pulled a couple tenths faster in the 1/4 mile. that was the only change he had done to the car.

as far as running lower octane gas in your car, that is not good. honda motors are designed to run 90+ octane. that is when the motors run their best. run lower octane gas, get worse gas mileage, poor idle (not always), hesitation during acceleration (again, not always). my crx got over 40mpg on 93 octane, always ran great, especially at high rpms. when my brother put in 87 octane i went down to 32mpg and the car just didn't run smooth. i would never recommend to anyone to put in anything less than 90 octane. also the higher octane burns cleaner and causes less deposits in your motor.

You say yourself, that ~90 is better than 110. The higher octane can yeild more power if the engine needs it. The higher octane the gas is the slower it burns. A faster burn will yeild more power but may cause detonation. If the motor is not detonating(pre-ignition) than the fuel is fine and does not need to be of higher octane. And most hondas were disigned to run on 87 not 90+.

Maybe a SOHC Accord, but not anything DOHC VTEC... Karl, run 93 and jack your timing up, you will see 5hp

I don't run anything lower than the recommended 92 octane
in my h22. The lower the octane the worse the car will run.

basically u dont need to run high octane (100+) unless u have raised compression and advanced timing. actually it can be harmful over time because more octane means it burns hotter and it can scortch your pistons and rings. on a stock motor with no timing advancement and no raised compression its not good to run much over 90-95 for an extended period of time. it will run better though if u do use it on occaison. me and my friends used to go and get 103 before we went and raced around at night. not too harmful when u only use it once or twice a week and there was definitly a noticable difference. but if u run it often without the proper motor work then it will eventually become harmful to more than just your pocketbook.
