Default Buying A Used Civic

Hello everyone.

Im getting closer and closer to buying a 93' Civic Coupe EX. It has 94,000 miles on it and it is being sold by a dealer. It is fully loaded with moonrooof, power doors, and power windows. The paint is flawless and the engine seems to be in good condition. The dealer said he replaced the timing belt and brakes. I will find out if that is true when I bring it to a mechanic tommorow.

His asking price is $4900. Right off the bat the dealer said he is pretty set with that price.

My question is, is this too expensive? Will I be paying more than what the car actually is. Im prepared to do some talking and try to get it down to around $4500.

The only thing I can find that is wrong with, for the reason of talking it down, is that it is a 10 year-old car with 94,000 miles on it. Any other suggestions? Your help would be much apperciated.

I think that's a good price on a 93 coupe. Talk him down to 4500, like you have in mind.

Yea I will. I checked the KBB retail value and its 5500.

Before I run out of posts how long does it take before I come a full member. This 5 a day thing is pretty wack.

Umm sorry I forgot how long it takes to become a real member, maybe a week I dont know. But you only have five posts per day untill you're a real member, so watch what you post carefully.

check out the VIN # and see when it was last smog d..that ll give u an idea how long the dealer has had the car..if its been sitting on the lot for more than a month..its costing him money every day..$4500 seems like a fair price..add on another 10% for tax and lic. fees

I checked the out the VIN at work. (unlimmeted DMV access ) Everything was clear, no accidents or anything. According to the records the dealer has had it for 5 months.

The guy even told me he was pretty anxious to get rid of it.

My plan is to go in there and tell him, listen ill pay you 4200 in cash, today, to take it off your hands. Then Ill let him take it up to 4500 if he says no to 4200.

You should not try to base your asking price on what he wants for the car (retail value of car at 5k) or what you want to pay for the car (4500) but start with what he probably has in the car (trade in value 2500-3000.) Here's the first step, don't let him know you REALLY wanna get the car but that you will buy it right now if he accepts your offer, then LOWBALL HIM! Tell him if he's anxious to get rid of it you'll take it off his hands for 3000. Now of course he will never accept this because he is in a business where he has to turn a profit on every car. He probably won't sell the car for less than 3999 cause that would only give him a 1000 profit. Let that be your goal. If he starts with the asking price of 4900, then you start with 2900 and your goal is to meet him in the middle at 4000. Hope this is enough help for you and good luck getting your car.

i paid 5500(asking 5900) for my 94 ex coupe, black, 100k miles, in really good condition back in year 2000(from a small dealer in rural PA). so 4500 seems alittile high to me, but i definately think you get it for 4k... in which case you bought yourself your first $500 in mods

If you come with cash Im almost positive he'll take 4200.... In my opinion the best way to get the price to drop is to pick the car apart. Overlook the car and start naming everything you see wrong with it, even if its little ****.. name whats wrong and about how much it would be to fix it

just talk good and sound determined. If he says no to say 3500. Say, alright..."I'm going to have to go get an ash tray, the upholstery cleaned, paint detailed, etc". Just pick out little things and say how much it will take you to get it all good! No doesn;t mean anything when it comes to used car dealers. It just means they think you'll pay more. Start low and stay low. Don't be so quick to say Yeah.
