Default how to: fuel filter replacement

i replace the fuel filter every 30k; i'm sure it is good for longer, but i like to tinker.
here is what you need:

the fuel filter is located in the engine bay just to the right of the battery:

first you must disconnect the battery and remove the fuel cap. then you use a 17mm socket to loosen the top bolt on the filter. be very careful and have a rag ready as fuel (under pressure!) will be released.

remove the bolt (banjo bolt) and fuel line, there are 2 washers on either side of the fuel line's fastener. these are crush washers and should be replaced. next remove the 3 x 10mm bolts holding the fuel filter bracket to the firewall. these are to the right of the filter.

next, remove the 10mm bolt on the left side of the bracket. this holds in a retaining band that holds the filter to the bracket:

now your filter will be completely freed except for the fuel hardline entering into the bottom of the filter. i used a crescent wrench to secure the filter and a 14mm wrench to turn the fitting (swage) on the hardline. the fitting DOES turn on the hardline so you don't have to worry about twisting/crimping the hardline, or otherwise ruining your day. i had to remove the intake hose to get the room needed for 2 wrenches and my hands and to work. your hands may be smaller but i recommend this step; anyone who has put in an intake will have already done this. you only need to remove the breather hose (squeeze the clamp and remove metal tube), loosen the screw clamp and pull the intake hose off the intake manifold, and remove the airbox cover to competely free the intake hose. once the fuel filter is loosen from the hardline, but mindful of the gasoline that will pour out of the filter.
do everything in reverse to install the new filter. only thread the hardline into the bottom of the filter, do not fully tighten until the filter is mounted back into its bracket and secured to the firewall, you will need a little play to get the filter into proper rotational position. helms says to tighten the hardline to 25ftxlbs (how to do this?), but i just did it handtight. torque the top gasline to 25ftxlbs. reconnect the battery, put on the gascap, start the car, and take her to your nearest track.

DO THIS IN A VENTILATED AREA.

BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE GASOLINE FUMES AND THE DANGERS THEREIN.

you can do a little inspection when the airhose is off the car. i removed my milk jug resonator long ago so now i regularly fill my airbox with road grit (mostly from the meadowlands parking lot).

the interior of my throttle body. it is surprisingly clean for a car with 34k miles which burns a minimum of 1qt oil every 3k miles.

thanks again to the wee-todd site

Easy install, but if you mess up it is expensive to fix. The first one I did I decided to be ignorant and rip the fuel line by mistake. Oh well, guess that is how you learn.

I did mine the other day as well. I didn't find it necessary to remove the firewall bracket though. I also couldn't figure out how to torque the fuel line bolt to spec so I used the markings on the bolt and filter that was already on (yellow in colour) and tried to get the alignment back to original but ended up not even close to it Filter didn't leak though so I guess its ok

Don't forget to keep a fire extinguisher closeby just in case ! You never know what could happen.
That would ruin your day if you burned down your car
