Best N/A engine swap?
I'm in the market for buying a 95-96 model EX 5 speed Accord and my plan was to swap the engine and build all motor but I didn't want to try with the stock motor so I'm looking at an h22 swap. Not sure whether or not this is a good idea or not.
My goal with th engine swap alone before upgrades is to be able to hang with Civic Si's (99-00) With the h22 alone, would I be able to do so? Thanks for all help!

Why not just buy a prelude? An Accord is going to run you 5-6K, plus a swap your looking at around 4-5k so now you spent 10-11k. You can get 97-98 lude for 11-13k in good shape.

I've got a 5th gen with stock JDM H22a with I/H/E and I walk 97+ lude that have I/H/E. did I mention that I'm still using the Accord Automatic tranny? hmmm, plus the sleeper part is great. cops dont messw with me.
Have to agree with 4-5k....easily if you are not going to do the swap yourself, that's exactly what you are looking to pay out of your pocket after all is said and done...
Been through a few already so i know...
motor setup-2200
Damaged parts-500
if you do go i/h/e-1000+
installatioon of motor-1000-1200..depends on who does what...
Sorry dude..you just broke the limit...but guess what, IT IS WELL WORTH IT...especailly when you hand gsr and ls vtec there ***...4get about SI's...waste of your time with the h22 power....

do'nt forget insurance on preludes is CRAZY. it's cheaper for me to buy a 98 z28 than it was to get a 92 prelude si. and my insurance usually hooks me up.
also, it is to my knowledge but from what i've been seeing in numbers preludes are pretty heavy cars for a 2 door sports car, 3000lbs? isn't that about the same weight, if not a little more than a accord coupe.
i'd say go for it. h22a swap is a sweet swap.
oh ya, and those civics don't really have crap. 160hp with almost no torque verses 190hp h22a with 150+ lb/ft of torque. b series motors don't have crap for torque, you'll get them off the line.

he's right, insurance is pretty high. they both way about the same, my 95 2dr after the swap weighs 2980, still rather heavy. if you can find a OBD1 JDM H22A go for it. they are 200hp and 161lb/ft of torque.

I'm all for the h22 swap in an Accord. If my 91LX wasn't rusting I would be considering it. Being that it is, I think I'll buy a 90 to 93 wagon and do it someday. Prelude says "race me", Accord says "who me?". Cars are like women, those you can sleep with are more fun.
some people do if they only by the engine, which is what I did. the dealer adjusted my stock engine's valve clearance and forgot to tighten one of the spark plugs (why they took them out is beyond me), a week later I drove home to Nashville from florida, some 400+ miles, when I got there I was only firing on 3 cylinders. only had enogh to swap engines, I'll swap the tranny at the end of the summer when I get my bonus. the auto's gears are like this, 1st 45, 2nd 85, 3rd 120+, and 4th ?(I have no Idea).
the engines redline is 8500 rpm, I change gears at about 7800-8000rpms when I race, other wise I gust leave it in drive. because of the setup of the engine, tranny and ECU, I have to shift manually if I want to hit the high RPMs, if I floor it in drive it shifts at the original shift points, this is because of the tranny computer (yes there is such a thing). havent had any problems yet.

I dont know very much about auto's, but I was always under the impression that if you leave your battery unplugged overnight, it resets your tranny computer, and if you drive around holding the pedal down till 5k for every shift, it will learn to be that way.
I also, from personal expirience, had the oppurtunity to drive a z3-m(the one with the m engine) around for a week. It was because my uncle who works at bmw got free usage of dealer cars for a year. well he already had a 5 series, so he let me drive a z3 for a week. unfortunatly it was auto, but I was always flooring it, making it shift high. When he got it back, he called me up a couple days later and said the mechanics asked him what he had done, because the engine was waiting to shift till ~4k, not 3k....
the reason auto trannys are so under rated is becaus the average Joe doesn't really care about performance. the trannys come from the factory tuned for these people (they are the majorty). the same is true for the 5sd but in its case it is limited because of the factory clutch. to make a Auto tranny perform better you have to change/modify the torque converter and install a perfomance tranny kit. one problem with Accord trannys is that the are geared for top end(i.e. longer gearing) unlike preludes who have shorter gearing. one company to look at for modifing auto trannys is http://www.levelten.com another is http://www.jmousa.com. there are a couple guys at h22a.org running accord autos. Nick M, what tranny you rinning? Accord or prelude?

sorry to bastardize this thread, but a newbie with a quick question: as someone stater earlier 1-2K for a h22 swap into an accord? would i be looking at this into a 92ish accord? and how difficult of a swap is it?
sorry and thanks
sorry and thanks
porkfried, do a search.
*cough* bullshit *cough*
my best friend is a bmw mechanic.....m motor in a z3?
also, the shifting thing, how would that work in your situation when you never unhooked the battery? you probably fucked it up and the mechanics wanted to know what you did to it since you ran the crap out of it.

hello. Curious. About your accord build with auto tranny. If you wouldn’t mind answering a few questions? Lol like first off where to start. I have an f23a4 99Honda Accord. I would like the full details lol.

Aye Lego2009, you do realise you are replying to 19 year old posts. I don't think you will get a reply from them to be honest.
There ARE h22s that come with auto trans but they have less power than the manual trans ones. You can't really use your f series auto trans with a h22, the gear ratios and shift points etc will be wrong.

I ran into an old dragster guy at a Home Depot—Larry Wilson of LW Fabrication, if it matters—and ended up talking for two hours in the parking lot about his track stories, ICE engineering, drivetrain mods, suspension tweaking, you name it!
I veered the conversation from dragsters and hotrods to... my fantasy of swapping a Honda daily-driver drivetrain to manual. Unphased, he casually asks "Why go to all that trouble just to use OEM? Order whatever you want from Summit Racing! With a Sawzall and a welder you can put anything into anything!". I suppose his nonchalant, though serious, suggestion is typical of a guy with many, many decades of experience frankensteining parts into custom-built screaming speedsters.
Still... decent advice worth considering for anyone in the planning stages of a major drivetrain swap with the performance as the end goal.
