Default Removed the AEM CAI, back to stock, first time ever - my impressions

Well my curiousity finally got the best of me and I removed the AEM cold air intake from the R. I bought 00-1214 used and it already had the AEM on it so I'd never driven it with the stock intake setup. I was mainly curious if some of the highway noise at 70-80mph was from the intake or purely from having no sound-insulation. I also wanted to see what all this fuss over "throttle response" was.

First of all, I miss the banshee hell-scream of VTEC with the AEM on, particularly when driving under one of my favorite bridges with the windows down

But besides that, I am very pleased with the stock intake box. I really have felt no loss of power, zero. (like you could even "feel" 4whp anyway ) I'd almost say that maybe when it hits VTEC it's not quite as pronounced, but that may just be because the sudden change in sound is gone.

The highway noise has been decreased, not by a whole lot, but it is definitely quieter. The trip to ITR Expo 03 will be a bit more tolerable now, lol.

Throttle response is awesome. I didn't know what I was missing... it's like having power on tap, that's the best way to describe it. I noticed most of the change in the power delivery between 2k and 5k. It's like driving a different car.

Who here is using just the Comptech drop-in filter with the stock intake? Any dynos? It's about the same price as the K&N drop-in filter charger and I thought I might get one.

I too have switched from an aem cai to my stock intake/airbox with a K&N drop in and a wannabe ice box.

I have tuned it twice. Once with the aem and the other with the K&N.

Aem has more power in the midrange, peak was about the same.

Ive been through the stock airbox, AEM CAI, and now the Comptech Icebox. By far i enjoy the comptech most, mainly due to throttle response and power spread over the entire powerband. Comptech also has a nice sound with a bit more pronounced vtec engagement over stock, unlike the nascar wail of the AEM. The AEM was too annoying for me, and midrange power felt pretty weak. Basically the gains are minimal between most intakes, but for bang for the buck a good filter in the stock box is fine.

i have it, it's great.. a little more volume, but not much.. butt dyno didn't notice anything, but I know it didn't slow it down either.. I now have a lot more mods, so dynoing wouldn't show much vs stock, but if I can borrow someones OEM filter, when I go, I can tell you the difference..

Wow, it' been so long since I've had the stock box on that I forget what it's like. Although I'm fairly sure that if I could do it all over again, I would have gotten the comptech.

Good write-up regarding your thoughts and experience. I agree 100% with what you said. The stock intake system is very good.

Here's what I wrote over a year ago when I made the same switch back to stock intake.

monday I replaced all the components back to stock even the resonator box and horn on my integra
I also was getting tired of the loud aem wail. I have both short ram and CAI, and I love how nice the tone is, it was just getting kinda annoying.
One thing I noticed is that the rpms seem to rise a bit quicker and more smoothly than with the other intakes,I may consider the comptech later on but for now I like it.

The little power hump near 4,000 is gone... but other than that the stock unit will be on my car for a while.

I may try to hook up a snorkle t00b to gather some fresh air.....

I seriously doubt that. I think it is pretty hard to lose hp with any aftermarket intake. I hope someone has some concrete evidence on this

Actually I think there are only about 3-4 intakes that make more power than stock. I wish the search went back further, we had dynos of tons of them.

Does that mean that the K&N Filter E2427 fits in the Stock Airbox.
Is there any Mods needed??????? Or is it just a straight hook-up.

ITR's don't get the same increase that others car can get with "Any After market Intakes". This is because most cars suck their air from under the hood. As you would know the ITR's Intake Air isn't.

Happy New Year.

On the dyno, probably yes. but last time I checked, a big *** fan can't blow the same amount of air over and through my car that driving down the highway can....

rob- who like 'less power', little chance of hydrolock, and throttle response

This is true. But at the same time, at the dyno you have your hood open to let the heat rise, whereas on the street, the hood will be trapping in all the heat.

I guess you really have to look at 1/4 mile times or something to get an accurate guage on performace of intakes.

good review also
my exact feelings and thoughts... I had forgot to mention the issue about water getting in the AEM, but I never really worried about it around here
