Not surprising, with almost the same curb weight but 17 percent more horsepower in the R.
"It's an unreasonable period car. I mean, there was a reason that the original Mini had the speedometer in the middle of the car. There's no reason for the new Mini's speedometer to have been designed where it was placed."
The speedo was put in the center of original Minis for cost containment reasons. They could use the exact same dash components for LHD and RHD. the new MINI has it in the center for mostly asthetic reasons....but it still serves the original reasoning since the same dash is used for LHD and RHD new MINI's.
The S's aren't fast yet. In the next model year MINI is to offer a "Works" edition of its MINI which will have a lil over 200hp and an LSD....that will be competitive with our ITR's...
Cheese~who has an old Mini

I'm in no way saying BMW put it in the center for cost reasons....more for stylistic purposes...but it's additional benefit for BMW is that they don't have to have different dashes for LHD and RHD.
We'll let the experts decide about the reasoning for the original mini. I posted up a thread at the Mini board I frequent.

George, I'll take you for a ride in my Mini sometime if you like....I only live a few mins away from you now in VA... I believe

Does that mean you'll actually drive ON the track this time...not just TO the track?
Otherwise, I guess I wasn't much in the mood anymore.
It didn't help that 2 days (or less) before the event I finally decided to put the fresh pads on the car and found that only 1 of the 4 matched up to stock!
Needless to say panic mode started to set in and I put the wheels back on the car and sat on the curb to think things over.
After careful consideration of the clearances which were preventing me from installing the bigger pads,
I found that by removing the spring clips at the leading and trailing edges of the caliper,
I could now insert the pads (one of which is still smaller than all three others)!
At this point my first mistake was not bleeding the old Motul 600!
But I digress, and at the track my mechanical skills were still somewhat short of the mark.
In summation, YES!
Prepare to be OWNED!

I was going to ask if you ever met Sir Alec. I have known one or 2 people who met him over the years.....So you asked him that question about the center speedo yourself?
It's prevailing "knowledge" amongst the enthusiasts that most of the manufacturing decisions of the car were based on cost reasoning. For instance, the exterior weld joints for the unibody pieces were done that way so cheaper unskilled labor could be employed on the assembly line.....
But as you well know, time has a way of distorting truths, and tends to idealize and make fairytails of once true stories....so you could well be correct.
I couldn't find the book where I cited my info from though. It apparently isn't in print anylonger. But I suppose the books could be wrong.
I think you got me wrong....I have an old Mini...one of 1961 vintage we could go for a ride in! I'm putting some new engine mounts on it this weekend...and then I'll be out and about in it.
