ATS users with 200whp+...I got a couple questions for you!
Ok, I have the ATS 4.9 FD and I absolutely love it (that’s beside the point)...
Now I was wondering, how many ATS users out there have over 200whp? I will be at (or close to) that mark by the time the next racing season starts in March/April. If there are a few of you out there, do you have any traction problems on low speed, uphill turns? I remember having to back off the throttle after turn 5 at pacific (if anybody is familiar with that track)...and having even more power would only amplify the problem.
Also, for those higher powered ATS users, are you finding that frequent shifting is hurting your performance?
Any input or experience would be greatly appreciated.

i have the gay dee em final in my almost 200 hp beast.....traction problems through 3rd....but i don't think i was in second gear ever except at the start of every race...

Pacific has a banking downhill right hander followed right after by an uphill left then onto a short uphill straight, I was at about 45 coming out of the left and it would be right into full torque powerband when I would apply gas, and I was having to back off the throttle...I might be forced to just putting it in third.
Do any of you AJ-R guys have any tips? I know there must be some of you with a good amount of power with the 4.9 FD.
I have the ATS 4.9. Yes, traction is poor until 3rd gear. What's cool is sticking in 2nd gear then hitting VTEC
Anyway, when used with moderation, it isn't much of a problem unless you make it one.
As for the shifting alot, well both yes and no. Some corners will keep the revs in the boil better than stock, others you downshift, then a quick up-shift, which can unsettle the car. It's got it's good points and bad points.
Dragging sucks as well. I'm bouncing on the rev limiter in 4th (9500 rpms) through the traps.

traction will be an issue
are you running an lsd?
depending upon how much tq your engine outputs will have an effect onthings
for me (only 170-180whp) right now (untuned) i have problems with traction in second gear on a cold night.
if you are making 200whp+ n/a then you will have some issues
but, there are things you can do to help
like better tires. maybe even a more balanced suspenion. but I would think the gains will be minimal for helping out on a road coarse.
i would say, get a lightweight flywheel/ light wheels, and intake the responds to throttle fast. so you can control the car more when it losed traction

I had 200whp and the JDM FD. 1st gear was useless from a start to redline. Sometimes in 2nd gear @ vtec I would lose traction as well.

currently, i have 194whp with an ATS 4.928. i have no traction issues (providing i do not dump the clutch) on dry pavement at all with 205/50-15's. 2nd same thing. if the pavement is loose, has gravel, or a hint of water/cold, traction then becomes a major issue. i also have a ATS 1.5 lsd, so i am sure that has a lot to do with it.

overall, the ATS 4.928 (and lsd) are awesome parts, and come highly recomended from me.
.....I don't think traction problems will stem from the final drive. *too greatly*
And if they do, then you need something stickier...
As for dragging, that's a non-issue since you're road racing.
But in my weekend track/ autox car the ATS has helped me all around.
I say go for it.
I haven't regretted mine, and my goal was 200-240whp.
188whp now.
OR better yet, get the ATS gear set. That'd be even more suited to road racing. (Although lap times are close, and the cost of entry is less with the ATS final alone.)

Hmmmmm...As the power goes up, you need less final drive.
I'm running a 4.40 in my setup...I'll switch to a 4.929 when I switch to 24.5" Slicks.

actually, none of us use the ats 4.9 fd
we all use the complete gearset
