Default Quick tranny question

My friend has an STD hatch and he just converted his tranny to a five speed. I'm not so car literate so do yall think they just popped in like a DX tranny or something? Or what kind of mods were needed for the conversion?
Also, is it worthed just changing to a 5 speed tranny from the original 4 speed?

Its plug and play. Only thing to worry about is to be sure that both the car, and the tranny are from the same year group. 1988 Civic and CRX trannies have a different input shaft, and the clutch from an 89-up will not fit, and the clutch from a 1988 will not fit the input shaft from a 1989-up.

While he's at it, he might as well try and get his hands on an Si tranny. He'll notice a good difference just switching to the DX tranny, but if he goes for the Si, that'll be the best improvement.

All you need is a 90-91 Si transmission

An 89 SI tranny will also work, just not an 88.
