Done some searching, just trying to see how many people are using motor oil compared to Honda MTF in their transmissions. Someone suggested I use Castrol GTX 10w40, which would offer more protection than the honda mtf....any thoughts??

Do not use motor oil. Use Tranny Fluid.

Thats what MTF is! it just has a detergent.

 

but just for a peace of mind i'd go with OEM MTF.

I just bought 2 quarts of HMTF for $9 and change at my local dealer

 

Ok....I broke out my owner's manual and this is what it says:

"Only use an API Service SF or SG grade motor oil with a viscosity of SAI 10W-30 or 10W-40."

 

Depends on what year Integra you have. The G2 and earlier G3 Integras say use motor oil but the later ones say use Honda MTF. Anyway, I myself have a 94gsr and have tried 10w-30, 10w-40, and Honda MTF for my tranny and the best of the group was the Honda MTF. With the Honda MTF, the shifts were very easy and smooth. 10w-30 was the worst, going into gear was hard, shifted like crap.
10w-40 was better but not by much.

that is correct. The fluid itself should have a weight of 10w30, but you should not use motor oil for long-term use. NEVER EVER use synthetic motor oil, it is much too slick for the synchros to function properly, which requires friction. Use Honda MTF, or if you really want synthetic use Redline MTL, which is a synthetic fluid with a 10w30 weight plus friction additives for proper synchro engagement.

oh and you will need to buy 3 quarts, since the tranny takes something like 2.3 qts. to fill it up to the filler hole.

 

i work at acura as a mechanic... we use 10w 30 in all our trannys, when we preform service on them... Think a tranny has gears... Motor oil works better

 

Where do you buy Redline MTF??? i checked with autozone, strauss, and pep boys. They didn't have redline nor honda mtf.

 

and that is why my car will never be serviced at a dealer, not even using the stuff the manufacturer calls for.... a Honda dealer in Memphis told me they don't even use the Honda coolant.

Buy Honda MTF from a Honda/Acura dealer.... buy Redline oils from either Redline (if they sell to the public) or some online retailer... speed shops usually carry it, too, but it's marked up more.

Tranny Fluid (there's a certain amount of viscosity needed)

My manual doesn't say anything about Honda MTF. That's why I made the poll.

 

if you use oil instead of OEM MTF, how often would you have to change it? I change my oil every 3-4000 kilometers.
The transmission has more moving parts, so wouldnt it wear out the oil faster?

 

the reason your engine oil gets dirty is b/c of the fuel.. No moving parts make it dirty its the fuel... but if u wanna use MTF go ahead.. I just gave my option.. Hope u find a good solution bud.

 

OEM and nothing else.

 

Let me know what dealer you work at so I'll be sure not to go there. I tried Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil and it was like, scratch here cratch there, it sucked!

However, motor oil does not contain the proper additives and continued use may cause stiffer shifting. Replace as soon as convenient.
